Bavaria's bathing lakes shine: only the Grüntensee is lacking!
The bathing season in Bavaria has begun and the water quality of the bathing lakes is impressive. As the Mercury reports, the EU praises the water quality of most Bavarian bathing lakes. A recent study shows that 90.5 percent of Bavarian waters have excellent values. However, there is also a downer: the Grüntensee near Wertach received a poor rating and is therefore criticized.
Water quality is divided into four classes: excellent, good, fair and poor. If the classification is inadequate, the European Environment Agency (EEA) recommends appropriate measures such as bathing bans or warning notices. Two other bathing lakes in the Aschaffenburg district, the Mainparksee and the Meerhofsee, only showed sufficient water quality. Interestingly, the values vary even within the Meerhofsee, where both excellent and good values were found at various measuring points.
European standards and Bavarian pioneers
A total of almost 2,300 bathing waters were tested nationwide, of which only nine were judged to be inadequate. According to the EEA, 85 percent of European bathing waters now have excellent water quality. With 90.5 percent, Germany is in excellent 8th place among 29 countries. Austria can even look forward to 95.8 percent, putting it in 4th place. In comparison, Switzerland performs in the middle field with 83.1 percent.
Emphasis on water quality is important not only for the swimming season, but also for the health of bathers. Fecal bacteria that come from sewage and farms can cause health problems such as upset stomach or diarrhea. Loud BR The water samples are primarily examined for contamination with these bacteria to ensure that the water can be used safely.
Regular checks for the safety of bathers
In Bavaria, the authorities have already taken water samples at various locations this bathing season. The analysis is carried out in accordance with the standards of the EU Bathing Water Directive, which is also used in Austria and other European countries. It is regularly checked whether the values meet the requirements and whether measures are necessary if the results are inadequate.
The data on the water quality of the various bathing lakes can also be viewed online on the EEA website. It is important for bathers to inform themselves before jumping into the cool water and to note the current values. Because as we all know: it's better to be safe than sorry!
