Cyclist on Pedelec critically injured: tragic accident near Seebach

On Sunday evening, August 10, 2025, a serious accident occurred on the district road between Haldenwang and Seebach, which put a 63-year-old Pedelec driver in life-threatening danger. The local authorities reported that the cyclist was traveling on a cycle path separate from the road towards Seebach when he crossed the road towards Bischlags near the hamlet of Wörth. There was a collision with a car driven by a 45-year-old female driver. Despite braking hard, the driver was unable to avoid the collision, so the cyclist was hit head-on and thrown over the vehicle onto the road

The accident appears spectacular, which resulted in the seriously injured cyclist being flown to Kempten Hospital by rescue helicopter. While the car's occupants were uninjured, the damage to the vehicle amounts to around 8,000 euros. The road had to be closed for around an hour while the accident was being investigated, which caused a stir in the region.

The dangers of riding a Pedelec

Pedelecs are enjoying growing popularity and can now be found in many households. According to information published as part of statistical surveys, by 2022 one in six households in Germany had at least one Pedelec. The number of accidents involving Pedelecs has increased dramatically since 2014, from 2,200 accidents with personal injuries to 23,900 in 2023. This represents a more than tenfold increase in just around a decade.

What is particularly alarming is the fact that almost eleven times as many Pedelec users had accidents in 2023 as in 2014. The latest statistics show that the average age of Pedelec accident victims is 53 years, which particularly highlights the dangers for older cyclists. With a Pedelec, the likelihood of suffering serious or even fatal injuries in the event of a fall is significantly increased, especially for older riders.

The region in focus

The Oberallgäu, where the accident occurred, offers a high quality of life due to its picturesque landscape and numerous excursion destinations such as the Breitachklamm or the Buchenegger Waterfalls. With an area of 1,527.97 square kilometers and a population of 155,413 (as of December 31, 2024), the region is a popular destination for excursionists and cyclists. The cities of Immenstadt and Sonthofen form the heart of the region.

The dangers of cycling and especially riding Pedelecs should not be underestimated in the region. With the increasing popularity of Pedelecs, it is important that both riders and motorists pay attention to each other to avoid tragic accidents.
