Serious accident in the Allgäu: cyclist critically injured!
On the evening of August 10, 2025, a serious traffic accident occurred in the Allgäu that left a cyclist with life-threatening injuries. A 63-year-old man wanted to cross a street and overlooked an approaching car. Despite the 45-year-old driver's immediate braking, a head-on collision occurred. The cyclist was not only hit, but also thrown over the car and landed on the road. Unfortunately, he had no chance and had to be flown to Kempten Hospital in a rescue helicopter.
The accident occurred on a district road between Haldenwang and Seebach. Fortunately, the occupants of the car were uninjured. But this incident shines an urgent light on the dangers on the road, especially for cyclists. The South German reports on the serious situation and the fact that a rethink is necessary in view of such serious accidents.
Statistics speak volumes
The accident statistics show a worrying picture. According to the Federal Statistical Office, a total of 441 cyclists died in road traffic in 2024, which is 33 fewer than in the previous year, but represents an increase in a ten-year comparison. Tragically, cyclists accounted for one in six road fatalities. An analysis of the daily news states that 70.7 percent of the 92,882 bicycle accidents resulting in personal injury were collisions with cars. In 75.3 percent of cases, drivers were primarily to blame for these accidents.
Older people in particular are affected by these statistics: almost two thirds of fatally injured cyclists were over 65 years old, with 43.5 percent of them traveling on e-bikes. This number is almost five times higher than ten years ago. Against this background, it is clear that measures to improve road safety are urgently needed at all levels.
A call for awareness
The road doesn't just belong to drivers. The results of the Destatis traffic accident statistics show that it is time to pay more attention to the safety of all road users. The focus should be on traffic education and infrastructure so that accidents like those in the Allgäu can be avoided in the future. Ultimately, cyclists are more vulnerable than drivers and need better protection when participating in traffic.
The sad reality is that road traffic still poses many dangers. It is up to us to make a contribution to improving safety and to treat the different road users sensitively.
