Neuschwanstein as a world cultural heritage: visitors without tickets turned away!

On July 12, 2025, Neuschwanstein Castle, one of the most famous castles in Germany, experienced a very special moment: It was officially declared a World Heritage Site. The castles Herrenchiemsee, Linderhof and the royal house on Mount Schachen were also added. This decision by UNESCO came about at a meeting in Paris, after more than 25 years in which Bavaria had specifically worked towards this award. The castles represent the vision and dream of King Ludwig II and attract around 1.4 million visitors every year. Many of these guests are from abroad and want to experience the unique buildings, which have become a real tourist magnet over a long time.

The nomination as a World Heritage Site promises not only an increase in awareness, but also a strengthening of the reputation of these historic sites. However, there are also challenges: In the last few days, numerous visitors who stood in front of the castle without tickets had to be turned away. This shows that interest remains high, but this leads to crowds and disappointments. In fact, it is advisable to book tickets online in advance to avoid such a fate and make the visit smoother, as [Merkur] reports.

The castles at a glance

In addition to their historical significance, the four newly designated treasures of the UNESCO World Heritage Site also offer impressive architecture. While Neuschwanstein Castle was built in the style of a medieval knight's castle, Herrenchiemsee Castle was based on the ideas of the Palace of Versailles. Linderhof Castle, famous for its Venus Grotto, and the Royal House on Mount Schachen, a simple wooden building with an oriental upper floor, also attract attention. These sites are architectural masterpieces that bring visitors closer to a piece of history and awaken dreams of the Middle Ages.

  • Schloss Neuschwanstein: Öffnungszeiten: 1. April bis 15. Oktober (täglich 9:00-18:00 Uhr).
  • Schloss Herrenchiemsee: Öffnungszeiten: 1. April bis 24. Oktober (täglich 9:00-18:00 Uhr).
  • Schloss Linderhof: Öffnungszeiten: 1. April bis 15. Oktober (täglich 8:30-17:30 Uhr).
  • Königshaus am Berg Schachen: Öffnungszeiten: 7. Juni bis 5. Oktober (täglich 11:00-15:00 Uhr).

The decision to include them in the world cultural heritage not only confirms the cultural value of these buildings, but also obliges Bavaria to permanently preserve and care for these sites. As was also highlighted on [Tagesschau] and [ZDF], it is not just the architectural splendor that inspires. It is also the stories and fantasies that surround these places that make them an important part of Bavaria's heritage.

Germany now has a total of 55 World Heritage sites, including Cologne Cathedral and the Wadden Sea. This wide range reflects the diversity and richness of German culture and shows that sometimes the only evil is the excessive tendency to queue, as the numerous, impatient visitors to Neuschwanstein Castle have experienced these days. However, anyone who combines the anticipation of a visit with the necessary planning will be rewarded with an unforgettable experience.
