Autumn holidays: traffic jam chaos on the motorways is looming from this weekend!
The coming days will bring with them a truly lively traffic volume throughout Germany and especially in the Cologne area. The ADAC expects a traffic jam risk from Friday, October 10th to Sunday, October 12th that will make all road users take notice. This is mainly due to the start of the autumn holidays in six federal states, including North Rhine-Westphalia, Bremen and Lower Saxony. At the same time, students in Hesse, Saxony and Thuringia are enjoying the second week of their vacation.
Another interesting aspect: the school holidays are also beginning in parts of the Netherlands, which also contributes to lighter travel traffic. Many people are now drawn to the picturesque hiking regions of the Alps or to the coasts of the North and Baltic Seas. That tastes like a long weekend in nature, doesn't it?
Particularly busy routes
With around 1,230 motorway construction sites in Germany, traffic is being put under additional strain. Particular difficulties are to be expected, especially on important traffic axes. The ACE traffic club lists some of the most affected highways that you should keep in mind before you drive:
- A1/A3/A4 Kölner Ring
- A1 Dortmund – Bremen – Hamburg – Lübeck
- A2 Magdeburg – Braunschweig – Hannover – Dortmund
- A3 Köln – Frankfurt – Nürnberg – Passau
- A4 Erfurt – Chemnitz – Görlitz
- A5 Hattenbacher Dreieck – Karlsruhe – Basel
- A6 Mannheim – Heilbronn – Nürnberg
- A7 Hamburg – Flensburg sowie Kassel – Würzburg – Ulm – Füssen/Reutte
- A8 Karlsruhe – Stuttgart – München – Salzburg
- A9 München – Nürnberg
- A10 Berliner Ring
- A24 Hamburg – Schwerin und Pritzwalk – Berlin
- A31 Leer – Emden und Oberhausen – Gronau
- A61 Mönchengladbach – Koblenz – Ludwigshafen
- A72 Chemnitz – Hof
- A81 Heilbronn – Stuttgart – Singen
- A93 Inntaldreieck – Kufstein
- A95/B2 München – Garmisch-Partenkirchen
- A99 Umfahrung München
Weather and excursions
Looking at the weather, we can hope that inviting weather will bring light excursion traffic to the local recreation areas. However, drivers who venture to higher altitudes in the Alps should once again put on winter tires due to foggy visibility and wintry conditions, as announced. The ADAC recommends creating an emergency lane even when traffic is at a standstill so as not to hinder the fire brigade and rescue services. Anyone who does not comply can face fines of up to 320 euros.
In addition, heavy rush hour traffic is forecast for Friday between 1:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The situation doesn't look any better on Saturday, as people who want to travel head for the popular routes towards the Alps, low mountain ranges and coasts. A flood of return journeys is expected from the afternoon on Sunday, which is also likely to lead to traffic jams on secondary routes.
Cross-border traffic
Anyone thinking about crossing the borders into Austria or Switzerland should also be prepared for increased traffic. Bottlenecks can occur, particularly on important transit routes to hiking destinations. Restrictions on the Brenner motorway due to renovation work on the Lueg Bridge could cause inconveniences. In addition, entry controls at the borders have been tightened since May; Waiting times are to be expected when crossing motorway crossings.
Armed with these tips and the necessary sense of proportion, nothing stands in the way of a successful autumn holiday weekend. Pack up the family, enjoy nature and drive safely!
