Duisburg overwhelms Jahn Regensburg: 4-0 win puts them at the top of the table!

A cool Sunday in Regensburg didn't exactly offer the best conditions for an afternoon of football. But despite the gloomy weather, the fans expected a ray of hope at the first home game of the third division season against MSV Duisburg. Unfortunately, this wish was quickly disappointed as SSV Jahn Regensburg suffered a bitter 0:4. The Duisburg team, who had a successful start to the season with a 2-1 win against VfB II, showed who was in control of the game right from the start. Already in the 8th minute, Patrick Sussek took advantage of a defensive mistake and made it 1-0 for the guests Welt.de reported.

Things didn't get any better for SSV Jahn Regensburg after falling behind early on. Just two minutes later, Christian Kühlwetter was shown a red card for a serious foul and had to leave the field. A bitter setback for the hosts, who subsequently fell even further behind. Jakob Bookjans had to be substituted in the 14th minute due to an injury, which only increased the uncertainty in the defense.

A class difference

The Duisburg team didn't let up and pulled away to 2-0 by half time. In the 24th minute it was new substitute Jan-Simon Symalla who was there at the right moment to extend the lead. This also became apparent as the game progressed, as Regensburg counted on a strong defensive performance, but were unable to withstand the pressure from Duisburg.

After the half-time break, the situation for the SSV became even more precarious. Regensburg switched to three positions to bring a breath of fresh air into the game, but even the changes couldn't prevent Duisburg from increasing the lead to 3-0 through Thilo Töpken in the 63rd minute. Five minutes later, Patrick Sussek scored a brace and made it 4-0. There was great disappointment in the Regensburg camp and some loyal supporters left the stadium before the final whistle, while Duisburg took the lead in the table with the win.

A look at the table

After the bitter setback, SSV Jahn Regensburg is now in 18th place in the table with just one point from two games, which doesn't exactly indicate a positive turnaround after last season as bottom of the table in the 2nd league. Duisburg, on the other hand, can look forward to a successful start to the season and are leading the third division with full points after two games.

In the next round, SSV Jahn Regensburg will face 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 on August 23, 2025, while MSV Duisburg will host SSV Ulm 1846 at the same time. Both teams are hoping to continue their upward trends or pull themselves out of the slump. The pressure will be great, especially for Regensburg, who wanted to start encouraged after last season. It remains to be seen whether this will succeed.
