Regensburg declares war on garbage: 3rd Jahn Cleanup Day in sight!

In Regensburg, the initiative to avoid waste is still on the rise. The third Jahn Cleanup Day took place on September 29, 2025, which encouraged everyone involved to actively participate. The aim of this event was to make the public aware of the importance of reducing waste while protecting the environment. As part of the sustainability initiative “Jahn Ecology: Rooted in Eastern Bavaria,” a call was made to clean up together at the Business entrance to the Jahn Stadium at 5 p.m.

The SSV Jahn and the city of Regensburg not only invited people to a garbage collection campaign, but also combined it with a captivating lecture on waste prevention. Supported by the “Zero Waste Regensburg” project, the focus is on inspiring citizens. Regensburg.de reports that Sabine Obermeier, project coordinator for “Zero Waste”, presented her innovative approaches to reducing waste generation.

Impressive past successes

In the 2024/25 season, the Jahnstadion Regensburg generated more than eleven tons of garbage and waste after the games. However, a large part of this waste did not end up in trash cans, but rather on paths and green spaces. The event aims to take a stand against pollution and make Regensburg a cleaner city. Stephan Burmeister, Head of Corporate Development and Sustainability at SSV Jahn, provided information about the progress and plans to avoid waste. SSV-Jahn.de highlights that citizens were able to get started actively with garbage tongs and garbage bags provided from 5:45 p.m.

What is particularly noteworthy is that the garbage collection campaign is part of the global “World Cleanup Day”, which is supported by the United Nations. The participants were not only able to help with the clean-up, but also enjoyed snacks and drinks that SSV Jahn provided for them. There was also a raffle for tickets for the home games and T-shirts from the “Jahnhaltig” collection.

Long-term perspectives for waste avoidance

But efforts to reduce waste are not just local. On a broader level, the federal government is pursuing ambitious goals to reduce waste and promote a circular economy. According to information from the Federal Environment Agency It is necessary to reduce the amount of waste and minimize the harmful effects on people and the environment. This is supported, among other things, by research projects and a waste prevention program, which is also implemented in Regensburg through initiatives such as “Zero Waste”.

With clear goals in mind, such as halving food waste by 2030, it is essential that all stakeholders work together to shape a sustainable future. Events like Jahn Cleanup Day are a step in the right direction to raise awareness about waste prevention and motivate people to actively make a difference.
