Bavaria is breaking new ground: humanless post machines are conquering the villages!
There's a lot going on in the world of postal services in Bavaria at the moment. Deutsche Post relies on innovation and has already installed 17 ATM branches in the Free State. These modern machines allow you to print out stamps and parcel stamps, send letters and receive and send parcels - all without human staff. According to Tag24, these machines are particularly found in rural areas or on the outskirts of town and offer 24-hour access to important postal services.
But why this step? It's no secret that the post office is struggling to maintain branches in many larger villages and districts. Structural change in rural regions contributes significantly to this. What is particularly noticeable is that there are no post offices in 32 places in Bavaria, although there should be. However, the post office plans to set up a branch or at least an ATM in some of these communities by the end of 2025 at the latest.
Automated branches in Germany
The Federal Network Agency is already processing 553 applications for additional ATM branches in Germany. Most of these applications are likely to be approved, which would mean that every 20th post office in Germany would be an ATM. Today there are around 12,600 post offices in Germany, mostly in supermarkets or kiosks. These new ATM branches are part of a legal regulation that has been in force since the beginning of 2025 to ensure basic services in the postal service. According to Bundesnetzagentur, Deutsche Post AG has a duty to guarantee this basic service.
On average, 95% of all letters and parcels must be delivered within three working days. If you look at it more closely, however, there are different requirements for 2024: 80% of letters must be delivered on the next working day, while 95% of shipments should arrive by the day after next.
Prepared for the future
All of these measures are intended to ensure that Deutsche Post's service remains at a high level in the future. The machines not only offer a practical solution for the rural population, but they are also a response to the changing needs of society. According to legal requirements, communities with more than 2,000 inhabitants must have at least one branch, which underlines the relevance of the post office to the population.
It remains to be seen how the new machines will be received in practice and what further developments the world of postal services still has in store.
