Weimer's cultural policy: artificial intelligence or censorship?

Wolfram Weimer, Minister of State for Culture for over a hundred days, is causing lively discussions in the cultural scene. On the occasion of his appearance at the book fair in Frankfurt, he spoke about artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on literature. He also drew a few smiles with his AI version “Weimatar” – apparently a less controversial character than the minister himself, as Backstage Classical reports.

However, the initial hopes for a depoliticization of cultural policy were quickly dampened by Weimer's ideological influence. Painfully disappointed expectations stand out from his statements, such as the equation between the AfD and the Left or the ban on gender in federal authorities and cultural institutions. Critics accuse him of using populist rhetoric, while he himself described public broadcasting, for example, as a “left wing”.

Cultural decisions under pressure

Weimer, an accomplished journalist and founder of the magazine Cicero, is dedicated to the political culture war. He is described as the creator of a “feel-good corner for the right” in the culture wing of the Chancellery. Under his aegis, culture, it seems, is viewed as a political battleground and less as a space for creative development.

In order to help the German film industry, he has negotiated financial aid and is considering encouraging streaming providers such as Netflix and Amazon Prime to make larger investments in Germany. At the same time, he is working on a differentiated concept for memorial sites and is firmly against anti-Semitism, although he is often considered unwilling to engage in dialogue.

Artificial intelligence as a future topic

The topic of artificial intelligence remains a hot topic: The German Cultural Council has published a position paper that addresses the challenges and opportunities of this technology in the arts and culture sector. The Cultural Council emphasizes that AI is a dynamic technology whose regulation can only be meaningfully designed as a task for society as a whole. It is noted that empowering human authorship should be a focus as many artists use AI as a tool in their creative work.

The Cultural Council also sees the need to integrate AI into education and university teaching in order to prepare future generations to use technology creatively. Issues such as data protection, copyrights and the accessibility of art and culture are of crucial importance. The Cultural Council's call for the public sector to support digitization in non-commercial memory institutions shows the will to use AI as a driver of opportunities for cultural heritage, as SWR adds.

With a detailed concept and clear positions, Weimer wants to determine the direction of cultural policy and thereby link the digital background and social needs. The shortage of skilled workers and different cultures intertwine, but not everyone pulls together. How the cultural scene will ultimately develop remains to be seen - after all, art is known for taking unexpected paths in times of crisis.

We can only hope that the voice of creative people will be heard louder in the cultural-political confusion. The question remains: Can an AI like “Weimatar” perhaps better guide us through this discussion?

The challenges are great, and Weimer's style remains controversial. But one thing is clear: there is still a lot to be done in the cultural debate in order to maintain creative freedom and at the same time preserve social values - aspects that are particularly important in times of Kulturrat and digitalization.
