Driver forgets handbrake: damage occurs in Schwandorf!

Yesterday in Schwandorf was marked by a series of interesting incidents that kept both witnesses and the police on tenterhooks. On Thursday morning around 8:00 a.m., a 51-year-old woman was the target of an unpleasant event. Later that day, after parking her black Renault on Aussiger Street, she discovered fresh accident damage to the left front wheel arch, which is estimated to be worth around 500 euros. However, the person responsible had already left the scene of the accident without reporting. The Schwandorf police are therefore asking any witnesses to call 09431/4301-0 to shed light on the matter.

Another event made a name for itself at 9:00 a.m. on Wackersdorfer Straße. A 20-year-old driver of an e-scooter was checked by officers there. What was unpleasant was that his scooter had an insurance license plate from the previous year on it and there was no valid insurance. This led to an investigation into violations of the Compulsory Insurance Act, which usually entails possible financial consequences. Accident insurance could be a helpful cushion here, as the VHV emphasizes, since many accidents can be traced back to negligent behavior, especially in solo accidents.

Alcohol influence and e-scooters

Drunk driving an e-scooter remains a hot topic. The VHV points out that driving while slightly intoxicated is usually considered gross negligence. It is interesting that if you have a blood alcohol content of 1.5 per mille you are still insured through VHV accident insurance, which represents a certain level of protection. However, we strongly warn against driving under the influence of alcohol, as accidents not only result in medical costs but can also be dangerous for other road users.

In Germany, the number of accidents involving e-scooters is increasing. Last year there was loud RBB A total of 9,425 accidents resulting in personal injury, an increase of 14.1% compared to 2022. What is particularly worrying is that 22 people died, which is a double compared to the previous year. Two-thirds of these accidents were caused by the drivers themselves, with improper road use and the influence of alcohol often being the main causes. At 15.1%, the proportion of alcohol-related accidents among e-scooters is higher than among cyclists.

Further incidents in Schwandorf

Back to Schwandorf: At 8:45 a.m. there was an incident on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße. A 34-year-old woman failed to apply her handbrake while parking, causing her car to roll into an 85-year-old man's parked Toyota. The estimated damage here was an impressive 1,500 euros.

In the afternoon, at 5:00 p.m., the police were called to a hypermarket on Wackersdorfer Strasse. The reason was a 51-year-old from Schwandorf who tried to take unpaid goods with him while his sister dutifully paid at the Scan&Go checkout. When he put ten euros into an employee's breast pocket, a breath alcohol test was carried out, which gave a strong result of 1.84 per mille. The man is now facing charges of shoplifting.

Finally, late on Thursday evening, around 10:40 p.m., a Fiat Ducato with Czech dealer license plates was checked on the A6 near Leuchtenberg. The officers discovered original Hungarian license plates under the passenger seat. It turned out that the vehicle was registered in Hungary, but without valid motor vehicle liability insurance. The driver, a 34-year-old, is being reported for license plate misuse and violating the compulsory insurance law while the investigation is ongoing.
