Enzo is here! 500th baby of the year brings joy to Schwandorf

On November 7, 2025, everyone involved was able to celebrate a small miracle at the Barmfühle Brüder Hospital St. Barbara Schwandorf: the 500th baby of the year saw the light of day. This joyful moment belonged to a little boy named Enzo, who weighed a whopping 3,540 grams and was 53 centimeters tall when he was born. The new parents come from Bruck in Upper Palatinate and are overjoyed about their new addition to the family. The mother, Theresa, also gave birth to her son Adam in this hospital four years ago, which strengthened her decision for this year even more. She felt so well looked after during her first birth that she relied on the tried and tested care again.

The birth of Enzo was attended by the experienced midwife Celine Michalke, who had already assisted Therese during the birth of Adam. This shows once again the continuity and trust that the families have in the team, emphasizes the midwife. Deputy Managing Director Michael Enzmann, Chief Physician Dr. Susanne Merl and station manager Anna Prey congratulated the family with a bouquet of flowers and thus acknowledged this special occasion.

A sign of trust

“Every birth is of great importance,” said Dr. Susanne Merl. She underlined the importance of the trust that families place in the maternity ward. The team at the Barmfühle Brüder Hospital sees Enzo's birth not just as a celebration, but as a sign of the trust placed in their obstetric care. In the hospital, parents have access to modern facilities, individual care and a dedicated team that works hand in hand.

“The team spirit is simply noticeable here in the hospital,” said Michael Enzmann. The close collaboration between doctors, nurses, midwives and parents is the key to the positive experiences that families have. Enzo's birth marks a small anniversary for the entire team and recognizes the daily, often challenging work of everyone involved.

A look at the history of the hospital

The term “hospital” comes from the words “sick” and “house” and describes a place where sick people are treated. This clear and precise description is not only functional, but also reflects the historical development of healthcare systems in Germany. Originally, hospitals were often associated with monasteries before becoming established as central places of health care in the modern sense.

In some regions – particularly in Switzerland and Austria – the term “hospital” is used. “Hospital” sounds a little archaic and can refer to smaller, specialized facilities. These regional differences bring an interesting dimension to the discussion about the terms and their use in everyday language.

With the birth of Enzo, the Brothers of Mercy Hospital shows that it is not only a place for the treatment of sick people, but also a space that brings life and connects families. Hearts beat to the beat here, and every new citizen is a reason to celebrate.
