Lukas Irlbacher: New breeding manager for dairy cattle breeding in the Upper Palatinate!
There is a breath of fresh air in agriculture in Upper Palatinate: Lukas Irlbacher, a 27-year-old from the Schwandorf district, has taken on responsibility as the new state breeding manager at the Upper Palatinate Cattle Breeding Association (RZO). On August 1, 2025, appointed by Christoph Härle, head of department at the State Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Tourism, Irlbacher is now at the forefront of the planning, implementation and monitoring of dairy farming in the region. He is succeeding Thomas Nibler, who has been head of the AELF in Cham since May 2025.
The importance of a state breeding manager for dairy cattle breeding in Bavaria cannot be emphasized enough. “We are pleased that we have now been able to find such a competent successor,” said Erich Pilhofer, Chairman of the RZO, about Irlbacher’s appointment. The RZO, which is the second largest association in Bavaria with 1,900 members, was founded in 2019 through the merger of the Weiden and Regensburg breeding associations. Irlbacher sees it as its responsibility to continue the tradition and quality of dairy cattle breeding.
A look into the past
Lukas Irlbacher not only has a personal enthusiasm for breeding, but also knows it inside out. Growing up on a dairy farm and breeding farm, he has had lived experience of the subject since childhood. He also has a master's degree in agricultural sciences from the Technical University of Munich. Irlbacher began his traineeship in 2022 and passed his state examination the following year. Before his new job, he worked as a consultant at the AELF Tirschenreuth-Weiden and as a semester leader at the Weiden-Almesbach Higher Agricultural School.
Helmut Melchner, head of the AELF Regensburg-Schwandorf authority, sees this new appointment as a positive step: “We have shown a good hand here!” Irlbacher will now work closely with the Runderzuchtverband Oberpfalz to further develop the standards of dairy cattle breeding.
