Bavaria is running for an AI gigafactory: the future of technology in Schweinfurt!

In an exciting step towards the digital future, Bavaria is applying for one of the coveted locations for a new AI gigafactory, also known as the “Blue Swan”. Bavaria's Science Minister Markus Blume (CSU) is committed to the Free State's high-tech agenda and emphasizes that Bavaria is the only federal state in Germany that is applying for this groundbreaking EU Commission project. This is not just about a new location, but about much more: strengthening AI research and promoting excellence in science.

It is planned that the AI Giga Factory could be built in the city of Schweinfurt as early as next year. This new facility will produce state-of-the-art AI chips, 100,000 in total, which is four times more than the current facilities in Germany, located in Stuttgart and Jülich. The application documents have already been sent to the EU Commission, which will ultimately decide on the locations of the five AI gigafactories in Europe BR.de.

Strategic importance of AI research

With a focus on cutting-edge technology and innovation, Prime Minister Markus Söder highlights Bavaria's role in European AI research. In particular, he refers to the “Blue Lion” supercomputer, which is seen as a central component for developments in this area. Söder emphasizes that artificial intelligence will permanently change the world. “AI and supercomputing are the keys to our future,” said the Prime Minister star.

The Bavarian application thus becomes part of a comprehensive strategic approach that is based on scientific excellence, good infrastructure and the presence of globally active companies. A basic requirement will also be securing talent and high-quality jobs in the region, which will benefit not only Germany but all of Europe.

EU action plan for artificial intelligence

In parallel to the application for the AI gigafactory, the EU Commission has presented an action plan to promote artificial intelligence in Europe. The aim is to position Europe as a leading continent in the field of AI. The Commission plans to support up to five such gigafactories with an investment of 20 billion euros. This goes hand in hand with building a solid data and computer infrastructure and creating high-quality data that both companies and research institutions should have at their disposal Germany.eu.

A central aim of the plan is to strengthen Europe's technological sovereignty and ensure that companies have access to the necessary resources to survive international competition. Doubling data center capacity within the next five years is another ambitious part of this plan.

Overall, it shows that Bavaria not only wants to set the course for its own future with its commitment, but also wants to play a significant role in the European context of AI research. It remains to be seen what the EU Commission's decision will be, but one thing is clear: Bavaria has great potential to go higher with its application.
