Traffic chaos in the Schmalkalden district: massive construction sites until summer!
The road and construction site situation in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district will be challenging in the coming days. From June 30, 2025, there will be closures and restrictions on several important traffic arteries, which will affect both commuter traffic and leisure traffic.
A particularly hot topic is the A 71 between the Oberhof and Gräfenroda junctions. Here the Rennsteig and Alte Burg tunnels will be closed due to urgent maintenance work. The first lockdown begins on Sunday June 30th at 7pm and lasts until July 1st at 6am. Further closures are expected as a result and will last until July 4th. This will pose a challenge for many commuters and travelers, as diversions are already signposted Rhön Canal reported.
More traffic disruptions
The L 1024 between Brotterode and Trusetal will also be affected; there will be a complete closure until July 12th due to tree felling work. The diversion is of course signposted. The L 1117 in Steinbach-Hallenberg, Rotterode district, will also be completely closed from July 7th to August 15th due to the laying of gas pipes. It is recommended to use the detours and allow additional time.
Another hot spot is the L 2618 in Oepfershausen, where traffic disruptions are expected from June 30th to July 27th due to fiber optic expansion. There is also a complete closure on the K 84 in Schwallungen until August 8th, which is due to road construction and sewer work. The diversion leads via Wasungen, which is particularly challenging for local traffic.
