Drama on Lake Starnberg: student missing, tragedy in swimming accidents!

On Sunday afternoon, June 15, 2025, there were tragic swimming accidents at Lake Starnberg. Within a short time, two men went under, which led to a tense situation for numerous bathers.

A 23-year-old student from India is missing after sinking in the southern Bay of Starnberg. The student's friends reported that they were unable to get him onto a rented electric boat. The alert about the incident was received at 1:40 p.m., while the search for the missing person began at 4:30 p.m. The Munich technical riot police are using an underwater robot to search the scene of the accident at a depth of around 30 meters. A buoy marks the possible sinking site, which is about 500 meters from the shore in Kempfenhausen. Simon Scholz from the Starnberg water police is responsible for coordinating the search.

Another tragic incident

In another swimming accident on the same day, a 32-year-old man from Munich drowned. He jumped into the water at 1:30 p.m. and was later unable to get back on board his boat. Although bathers immediately initiated resuscitation and the water rescue service continued their efforts, the man died at the scene of the accident. His partner and five children who were there are currently being looked after by a crisis intervention team. The accidents occurred in the Percha bathing bay in Buzentaur Park, which makes the situation seem particularly unfortunate and unusual since two incidents are so closely related.

The search for the missing student will continue on Monday with the support of the Fürstenfeldbruck criminal police, water rescue dogs, drones as well as a sonar boat and various diving personnel. On Monday afternoon, two more search dogs provided possible clues about the sunken student's scent, raising hopes of a quick rescue.

Important information about safety in the water

In view of the serious incidents, the BRK water rescue service urges caution in the event of swimming accidents and announces basic rules for safe behavior in the water. It is therefore crucial not to jump into the water in a panic to help drowning people, as their fear can often become threatening. A rescue attempt should always be made from a stable point and, if necessary, buoyant objects such as life preservers should be moved aside to minimize the danger to yourself and the drowning victim. In the event of a swimming accident, every second counts, so first aid should always be started quickly.

The water temperature on Monday is reported to be just under 21 degrees, which makes the situation appear somewhat milder, but the risk remains high given the current situation. The search for the missing student continues with the utmost urgency, although hope for a positive turnaround is not given up.
