Wedding parade on the A95: traffic collapse and police intervention!
A wedding parade caused significant traffic disruptions on the A95 between Munich and Starnberg on Saturday afternoon. The first emergency call was received by the police at 2:40 p.m. Loud Mercury Witnesses reported a blockage of all lanes between the Munich-Fürstenried junction and the Starnberg motorway triangle. This resulted in a two to three kilometer long traffic jam. The arrest of the entire road meant that the vehicles, including the bride and groom, were traveling in both lanes at a speed of 50 to 60 km/h. A vehicle drove with hazard lights and a red Moroccan flag while another car filmed the event.
The police diverted several vehicles at the Schäftlarn junction and were thus able to contain the situation. The 24-year-old driver of one of the cars involved, a Spaniard from North Rhine-Westphalia, was temporarily arrested. His driver's license was confiscated and criminal proceedings were initiated for coercion in traffic. “We have the driver’s complete details and have initiated further investigations,” said a police spokesman. South Germans reported that tens of thousands of vehicles rolled along the highway, causing unnecessary delays.
An absolutely unusual sight
What was striking was not only the number of cars - an estimated around 20 vehicles - but also the behavior of the participants. Witnesses reported abrupt stops and “zigzag driving” to prevent other road users from overtaking. There have been similar incidents in the past in which wedding parties were noticed for such risky behavior on the road. For example, in 2019, a similar convoy was observed blocking all lanes of the A95, prompting police to call a helicopter to assist The Yellow Leaf is kind enough to point this out.
The traffic police in Weilheim have started the investigation and are asking witnesses who felt compelled to call 0881/640-302. The entire situation is a stark demonstration of how celebrations can sometimes get out of hand. While weddings should be celebrated, it remains important to keep the safety of all road users in mind and act responsibly.
