Drunk e-scooter drivers in Straubing: Police sound the alarm!

At the weekend, police officers in Straubing carried out alarming checks and stopped several drunken road users. Particular attention was paid to e-scooters, whose drivers have increasingly come under the attention of the authorities in recent years. It turns out that drinking and driving - whether driving a car or an e-scooter - remains dangerous.

On Saturday evening, at 10:20 p.m., the police stopped a 17-year-old e-scooter driver on Heerstrasse. A voluntary breath alcohol test revealed that the teenager was intoxicated, so he was not allowed to continue his journey. This is one of the many checks that are carried out to ensure the safety of the streets, among other things by increasing the presence of police officers.

Significant alcohol levels among other drivers

On Saturday morning at 7:15 a.m., a 29-year-old e-scooter driver was stopped on Outer Passauer Straße. Here the level of alcoholism was so severe that a blood sample was ordered. A 51-year-old man was also checked on Ittlinger Strasse on the same day. His test was also positive for alcohol, which led to another blood draw.

But it wasn't just e-scooter drivers who were targeted by the police. On Sunday morning at 6:00 a.m., a 25-year-old driver was noticed on Uferstrasse. Here too, a voluntary test confirmed significant alcohol consumption; his driver's license was confiscated and a blood sample was ordered.

Legal consequences for drunk drivers

It should be noted at this point that some new legal frameworks regarding driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs apply to e-scooter drivers. According to that ADAC the law is strict here. A man who was stopped while under the influence of drugs while driving an e-scooter had to pay a fine of 500 euros and was banned from driving for a month.

The Zweibrücken Higher Regional Court made it clear that the danger posed by an e-scooter is not mitigated by the vehicle's lower physical properties. The dangers, whether aggravated by alcohol or drugs, remain and can lead to serious accidents.

In Germany there is a blood alcohol limit of 0.5 for e-scooter drivers. However, anyone who is on probation or under the age of 21 must adhere to the strict alcohol ban of 0.0 per mille. If you drive drunk with a blood alcohol level of 1.1 or more, you can face fines or even prison sentences of up to one year. The corresponding fines follow clear guidelines. For first violations of 0.5 per mille or more, 500 euros and additional points are due, and the second time the fine can even rise to 1,500 euros and lead to a driving ban of several months, as shown on bussgeldkatalog.org can be read.

This weekend in Straubing showed once again: Safety on the streets begins with the responsible use of alcohol and drugs, no matter which means of transport you choose. It seems as if the police have shown a good knack for ensuring road safety and identifying potential dangers at an early stage.
