Shocking acts of violence

Although violent crimes make up less than 4% of all crimes recorded by the police in Germany, they have an enormous impact on the population's sense of security. The numbers are alarming: around 217,000 violent crimes were registered in 2024, the highest number since 2007. The last few years show that the numbers have been rising again since 2021 and are almost a third above the low point of around 165,000 cases during the pandemic. Statista highlights that many violent incidents may be caused by economic uncertainties as well as social pressures.

Interestingly, around 260,000 people are victims of violence in Germany every year. What is particularly worrying is the increase among young violent offenders, whose proportion has risen dramatically. According to reports, the BKA found that around a third of the suspects were under 21 years old, which indicates a worrying social development.
