1.1 million euros for new short-term care for children in Traunstein!

Something very special is happening in the area of short-term care in Cologne: On June 25, 2025, a crucial meeting of the Sternstunden project committee took place, which initiated important funding for the new construction of the Lebenshilfe Traunstein short-term care facility for children and young people with intellectual disabilities. This preliminary commitment of 1.1 million euros caused great joy among those present. The participants included Thomas Jansing, CEO of Sternstunden, as well as other representatives of Lebenshilfe and BayernLB.

A central task of this new facility will be the care of children and young people whose carers are temporarily unavailable, for example due to vacation or illness. “Short-term care is essential when care at home is not possible,” says Annemarie Funke, managing director of Lebenshilfe Traunstein. She emphasized the importance of this support measure and the need for a contemporary space for care.

Care options and financing

The concept not only includes intensive nursing care, but also educational offerings in a family-like atmosphere. According to lebenshilfe-traunstein.de, up to 17 guests can be accommodated in nine single and four double rooms, which are of course designed to be wheelchair accessible and barrier-free. Caring relatives also have the opportunity to enjoy soothing relaxation during this time while their loved ones are cared for.

Financing is usually provided by nursing care funds, provided a level of care is available. Alternatively, social welfare providers can step in, or you can cover the accommodation costs yourself. The model offers a flexible solution that makes it possible to respond to the individual needs of guests while at the same time relieving the burden on relatives.

Broadened perspectives

In addition to Lebenshilfe Traunstein, Lebenshilfe Ostallgäu-Kaufbeuren has also received a commitment - in this case for the construction of a new interdisciplinary early intervention center in Füssen. This is supported with one million euros by Sternstunden and illustrates the valuable contribution that such initiatives make to improving the quality of life of people with disabilities.

The final decision on the funding is still pending and must be confirmed by the Sternstunden general meeting on July 8th. If this succeeds, it would be a further step not only to improve the quality of care, but also to set milestones in the care of people with disabilities. “We have a good hand when choosing our projects,” summed up Thomas Jansing after the meeting.

Short-term care not only has a practical benefit, but also offers scope for the future development of the area. Ultimately, it is a central task of society to take the inclusion and support of all people seriously and to actively shape it. All those involved are looking forward to the further development of this promising project, which will benefit both children and their families.
