Fashion brand Dollinger closes: last chance for clearance sales!

The fashion and traditional costume chain Dollinger, with over 60 years of tradition in business, will close all of its German branches by October 31, 2025. This decision follows bankruptcy and a failed restructuring process. Managing director Kathrin Proft has announced that no viable plan to continue the company could be developed. Saying goodbye to the branches is a sad but necessary step for the employees and loyal customers.

In a final attempt to clear inventory, a major clearance sale will begin in August 2025. Only the branch in Salzburg is spared from these closures and will be continued by a sister company. But the situation is depressing: Of the original 150 employees, only 31 are still employed in the company, although some can be placed in other subsidiaries of the group.

Reasons for closure

The challenges for Dollinger are numerous. The decline in customer frequency, especially since the Corona pandemic, has had a severe impact on stationary retail. According to reports, the Corona crisis, which has affected many businesses in Germany since 2020, has led to a massive drop in sales. Retailers in particular have suffered from the long lockdowns and strict hygiene requirements. This development meant that many regular customers were missing and the city centers were deserted.

In addition, rising costs, particularly for rents and energy, are putting a strain on the business. The announced increase in the statutory minimum wage has further increased economic pressure. The migration of customers to online providers has also had noticeable consequences. A look at the last few years shows that many businesses have closed or had to adapt their strategies in order to keep up with national competition.

Remaining options and outlook

The Dollinger branches in Berchtesgaden, Bad Reichenhall, Reit im Winkl, Ruhpolding and Traunstein will soon be a thing of the past. The company has always emphasized the connection to its locations and their customers and deeply regrets this step. The owner family would like to thank the employees, customers and suppliers for their support.

It is to be hoped that the experiences from the closure will be reflected in the industry in the future and that other companies can learn from Dollinger's story. Despite the difficult times, the branch in Salzburg continues to operate as a store for the Felicitas, HANS and Stapf brands, which represents a small ray of hope in this gloomy news.

Overall, it can be said that the corona pandemic, which is considered the greatest economic challenge since the Second World War, has resulted in a profound transformation in retail. The impact continues to be felt and offline retail must adapt to faster changes and new concepts.
