Unterallgäu district starts new WhatsApp channel for citizen information!

The Unterallgäu district has now launched its own WhatsApp channel. From now on, citizens can conveniently receive current information on their smartphone. This innovation is open to everyone and offers a variety of topics that affect daily life in the district.

Subscribers to the channel enjoy free push notifications informing them about important areas such as Waste disposal, approvals, reports from the district council and the committees. There is also information about leisure activities, events and current information about family, climate protection and nature. Professional news, such as job advertisements, round off the offer. The district can provide information quickly and directly, particularly in critical situations.

A practical tool for everyone

The WhatsApp channel is displayed under the “News” section in the app, separate from the personal chats, which ensures clear handling. Settings allow users to activate push notifications by activating the bell in the top right - so they are always up to date.

It is important to note that direct chat with the district is not possible in the channel. If you have any concerns or questions, you can still seek personal contact via email or telephone. Great importance is attached to data protection here; Subscribed users are anonymous and are not visible to the district or others.

District Administrator Alex Eder highlights how important being accessible via WhatsApp is these days. The installation of such a channel is a further step to improve communication between the district and citizens.

Why WhatsApp?

The use of WhatsApp in local government is also being considered by other regions in Germany. Cities and districts are increasingly benefiting from the speed with which information can be distributed via messenger. Other countries such as Thuringia have established similar channels to inform their citizens about events, road closures and other news.

However, a look at data protection shows that the skepticism towards WhatsApp is not unfounded. Data protection advocates advise caution, especially since alternative solutions are less common in other countries. Nevertheless, WhatsApp is currently installed on almost every smartphone and therefore represents an effective supplement to traditional communication channels.
