VGN expanded: Weiden and Neustadt now part of the transport network!

Today, January 1, 2026, a new dimension of mobility opens up for passengers in the Greater Nuremberg Transport Association (VGN). With the expansion of the VGN area to include the city of Weiden in der Oberpfalz and the Neustadt an der Waldnaab district, the offer becomes even more attractive for citizens. Over 1,000 bus and train lines can now be used with just one card, making travel planning much easier. The city of Amberg and the districts of Amberg-Sulzbach and Neumarkt are already benefiting from this user-friendly system, which promotes stress-free mobility. GongFM reports on the celebratory announcement, which took place at an on-site meeting at the Weiden ZOB. The event was accompanied by VGN managing director Andreas Mäder, deputy district administrator Albert Nickl, mayor Jens Meyer and VGN managing director Anja Steidl.

But that's not all that's happening in the transport network. In parallel with the VGN expansion, the Munich transport association has also expanded. The city and district of Landshut in Lower Bavaria have been newly added, which shows that mobility in Bavaria is flourishing and is constantly on the move.

Public transport: A key to the future

Mobility is very important in Germany. Public transport plays a central role in the national transport strategy. More and more people are recognizing the benefits of environmentally friendly alternatives. With the introduction of the Deutschlandticket, the use of public transport systems was significantly increased. Before the introduction, buses had around 3 million passengers and trains 2 million. After the introduction, this number increased significantly and made a strong statement about the popularity of public transport. Germany Insight highlights that buses now have around 4 million passengers and trains have 3 million passengers.

The study “Mobility in Germany 2023” also shows that private motorized transport is declining, while walking and cycling are increasing. Pedestrians now make up 26% and cyclists 11% of the journeys made. What is particularly noticeable is the trend that Pedelecs and e-bikes are becoming increasingly popular; around a third of the kilometers cycled are now covered using these environmentally friendly alternatives. VGN With this development, it offers numerous information and customization options in order to optimally meet the needs of consumers.

The challenges of modern mobility

But adapting to changing mobility needs remains a challenge. Especially in rural areas, many people still rely on cars, while urban areas benefit from a more dense local transport service. Innovative mobility offerings such as car sharing and ride-hailing are increasing and demonstrate the flexibility that is important to modern passengers. Future trends indicate that the integration of different modes of transport and sustainable urban development will continue to gain in importance.

Mobility in Germany is an exciting interaction of different systems. Public transport is a central component of this strategy and is becoming increasingly important, particularly through sustainable alternatives. The VGN shows how new measures and expansions can make mobility in the region easier and thus offers a good hand for the future.
