Catfish attacks on Brombachsee: swimmer is injured again!

At Lake Brombachsee in Middle Franconia, a catfish attack once again caused excitement. A swimmer was bitten on the arm while near a bathing island near Absberg. So reported merkur.de. This is not the first incident of this kind in recent weeks, as a catfish over two meters long injured at least five bathers at the end of June. After this worrying incident, police closed the swimming area and shot the aggressive fish to prevent further attacks, especially in view of a planned music festival at the lake.

It seems that the catfish's behavior could be due to the defense of its clutch. The fish species are usually shy and tend to stay in deep water during the day. In this incident, however, the catfish was particularly aggressive. An employee of the fishing association, André Macher, explains that the low water levels and the end of the spawning season could lead to the defense of the eggs below bathing platforms. The Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district office has already commissioned investigations into spawning grounds in the lake in order to take preventive measures, reports zdf.de.

Activities at Brombachsee

Every year, Lake Brombachsee attracts many visitors looking for summer fun. Bathing islands are a popular destination for relaxing and swimming. But recent incidents have shown that caution is advised. The 69-year-old swimmer, who was slightly injured by a catfish two weeks ago, is just one of several needy people affected by the plowed monsters. Five bathers were also attacked in another part of the lake. Therefore, the decision to dismantle the bathing platforms and close the area provided additional safety.

Although catfish are widespread in Bavaria and live in lakes and slow waters, such attacks are extremely rare. Experts agree that the aggressive behavior this season is abnormal and closely related to the conditions surrounding spawning. It remains to be seen whether the measures taken are sufficient to prevent further attacks. The killed catfish from the last incident was divided into 120 fillet portions at a local inn and completely consumed, according to information from spiegel.de.

The signs suggest that authorities and professionals must continue to be vigilant to minimize the risk to swimmers and preserve the enjoyment of swimming in Lake Brombachsee.
