Episcopal Ordinariate in Würzburg: New Kilianshaus from 2028!

The Episcopal Ordinariate of the Diocese of Würzburg is planning a comprehensive redesign of its administrative structure. The move to the Kilianshaus between the cathedral and Neumünster will be completed in 2028, as katholisch.de reports. The current location in Marmelsteiner Hof will be abandoned for this purpose. This is also linked to an ambitious concept for the reorientation of the museum at the cathedral, which will also continue to find its place in the Kilianshaus.

What can visitors expect in this new contact point? The cathedral information center will be set up in the entrance area and will act as a central contact point for all guests. In this way, the diocese of Würzburg is setting an example of accessibility and openness. Offices for the auxiliary bishop, vicariate general, chancellery and other important departments are planned on the second and third floors of the Kilianshaus.

From Marmelsteiner Hof to Kilianshaus

The museum at the cathedral is expected to close in the summer of 2026 to make room for the necessary renovation work. What challenges are associated with this renovation? The Kilianshaus urgently needs renovation work, especially to replace corroded sewer pipes. Extensive work is also needed in the areas of thermal insulation, fire protection and ventilation. The renovation costs are limited to a maximum of 20 million euros and are to be refinanced through rental income.

In addition, the diocesan financial structure will be strategically reorganized for the coming years. The diocese's total budget for 2024 is estimated at around 210 million euros, and church tax revenues amount to around 171.1 million euros, which represents a solid basis. In all of this, Episcopal Finance Director Sven Kunkel emphasizes the need to manage carefully and plan for the long term, as pow.bistum-wuerzburg.de describes it.

Renovation measures and financing strategies

It is emphasized that renovation and comprehensive planning are essential in order to maintain the pastoral and charitable offerings in the long term. In view of the current economic developments, from the corona pandemic to the war in Ukraine, it is clear how important it is to maintain a stable course even in challenging times.

As a reminder: the balance sheet profit of 2.1 million euros, for the first time after years of losses, shows that positive changes can occur even in economically difficult times. The bishop and his finance department will have to continue to show a good hand in planning and implementing their projects in the future.

There is a great opportunity here for the Diocese of Würzburg: the creation of a modern and well-structured office in Kilianshaus will not only optimize the administrative process, but also revitalize the cultural and historical aspects of the diocese.

The entire changeover will last until 2028. At the same time as the new museum, the Kilianshaus will offer a modern contact point for anyone interested, making it a significant enrichment for the entire region.
