Martin Heilig becomes the new mayor of Würzburg!

On July 1, 2025 it is now official: Martin Heilig will take over the office of Mayor of Würzburg from Tuesday. In the past few weeks, Heilig has been able to gain valuable experience as he worked closely with his predecessor Christian Schuchardt. The change of office went smoothly and without any significant complications. Heilig will take his oath of office on Thursday during the city council meeting before he sets off into the public life of the office on Friday with the Kiliani opening and the accompanying beer tapping.

The new mayor has big plans for the coming months, which include, among other things, the construction of a multifunctional arena, the progress of tram lines 6 and the expansion in Grombühl. What remains particularly exciting is how cooperation in the city council will work out. Heilig does not expect the other parties to block him, which would help ensure a harmonious start to his term in office. His election as mayor came about after Christian Schuchardt surprisingly announced that he would resign from office early.

A look at Martin Heilig's career

Heilig, who was born on August 28, 1975, brings both political experience and an exciting professional career. Before his election as mayor, he worked as the second full-time mayor and climate mayor in Würzburg from May 4, 2020 to June 30, 2025. Communication with citizens and commitment to climate policy were heavily influenced by his work.

His professional career is just as diverse: Heilig began with an apprenticeship as a construction clerk and then studied European law and economics at various universities before graduating as a qualified business teacher. He also made a name for himself in sports, trained at the Würzburg Academic Rowing Club and won several championship titles.

Political successes

But it's not just his sporting qualities that stand out. Heilig's political commitment is just as impressive: among other things, he was a co-founder of the GREEN Youth Bavaria and served for a long time as district chairman of Alliance 90/The Greens in the Würzburg-City district association. In the 2020 local elections, his party won the most seats in the city council and was then elected second full-time mayor.

The election as mayor was an exciting process. Heilig received 39.6% of the votes in the first round of voting on May 4, 2025, which secured him victory over CSU candidate Judith Roth-Jörg in the runoff election on May 18, 2025 with 64.8%. This makes him the first Green mayor in Bavaria, which is certainly historic for the Free State's political landscape. Radio Gong reports that the next city council election is regularly scheduled for next year, while the mayoral election and the city council election in 2032 fall on the same date.

Through his diverse commitment and strategic planning, Martin Heilig has the potential to prepare Würzburg for a promising future. His leadership style and vision will undoubtedly have a formative influence on the city's development.
