Philip Ziesche moves to the Selber Wolves: A new ice hockey dream!

A fresh wind is blowing through the ranks of the Selber Wolves! With 20-year-old Philip Ziesche, the Wolves have signed a talented player who wants to bring fresh energy to the team. The young ice hockey professional has already had an exciting career and sees Selb as the perfect opportunity for a new beginning.

Ziesche began his career with the Eisbären Juniors Berlin and then developed his skills at the renowned Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy in Salzburg. Here he played for four years in the U18 and U20 teams and acquired valuable skills. In the last two seasons he played 53 games in the DEL2 for the Lausitzer Füchse and was also able to play 28 games in the Oberliga for the cooperation partners Riessersee and Leipzig. These experiences should help him to assert himself in the Oberliga, the third highest division in Germany. Ice hockey statistics shows that the Oberliga has gone through many changes since its founding in 1949 and was only split into the North and South groups in 2015.

A new beginning with the wolves

For Ziesche, the move to the Selber Wolves is a step that fills him with a lot of confidence. “Ice hockey is alive here in Selb and the location is very important to me,” says the young player. Head coach Felix Schütz has already praised his talent and work ethic, which gives Ziesche additional motivation. “I want to contribute to the team’s success both offensively and defensively,” he explains.

The Selber Wolves went through a difficult phase last season as they were relegated from the league. However, Ziesche sees this challenge as an opportunity to showcase his own abilities and get the team back on track.
“The goal is a successful season,” he says, looking hopefully to the future.

The ice hockey scene in Germany

Ice hockey is an extremely popular sport in Germany, which is very popular with around 4.9 million Germans. Further proof of its popularity is the increasing number of members in the German Ice Hockey Association, which grew to around 25,900 in 2024. This is also reflected in the number of spectators in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL): an average of almost 7,800 spectators attended each game, which is an increase compared to the previous 5,900. Statista reports that the Eisbären Berlin won their eleventh title in 2025, while the all-time table is led by the Adler Mannheim and the Kölner Haien.

It will be exciting to see how Philip Ziesche will perform in the coming season. His ability to create offensive plays could turn out to be the key to the Selber Wolves' success. Wiesentbote reports that Ziesche is starting training with a lot of commitment in order to achieve his goal of having a successful season. The ice hockey fans in Selb can look forward to an exciting time!
