Zugspitze: New summit cross brings safety for inexperienced people!

The Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain, will be enriched with a second summit cross from July 3, 2025. This innovative structure, designed by artist Bernhard Rieger, will provide visitors with a safe place to enjoy the majestic views and take photos at the summit station at 2,962 meters. In times when many visitors, often inadequately equipped in sneakers or flip-flops, take the steep path to the original summit cross, this is a welcome improvement to avoid dangers such as: Frankenpost reports.

The new cross measures about three meters and stands 12 meters below the summit. This offers guests a risk-free visiting experience while allowing them to enjoy the stunning surroundings. The path to the historic summit cross, however, remains steep and dangerous, with slippery areas and narrow ledges of rock, which results in frequent deployments by the mountain rescue service to rescue people who are injured or in difficulty. The mountain rescue service has its hands full - according to Laura Schaper, press spokeswoman for the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn, the operations are by no means rare, as visitors often underestimate the weather conditions and the challenges of the Alps. The BR also underlines the necessity of this security measure.

Insights into the exhibition

The second summit cross will not only serve as a safe photo stop; it is also part of an accompanying exhibition that brings visitors closer to the history of the original summit cross. This cross was erected in 1851 and was finally replaced in 1993 by a replica from the Eschenloh art forge, which has also withstood many storms and storms since then.

In 2024, the current cross was repaired for the first time after a storm that tore off a spike in December 2023 and now has a special symbolism for the region. The original summit cross is now on display in the Werdenfels Museum, so that guests can find additional information not only in front of the new cross, but also the historic cross. Through a combination of art and safety awareness, the beginner's experience with the new cross becomes an authentic experience for the approximately 600,000 visitors per year who head to the Zugspitze, whether by gondola or on foot, according to Stuttgarter News.

So prepare yourself for a trip to the Zugspitze - from July there will be a new contact point for all summiteers, which not only offers safety but also the fascination of the Alps! Who knows, perhaps this second summit cross will soon become a new landmark, balancing the alpine beauty and the wealth of stories this mountain has to tell.
