Traffic lights for diversity: Bremen is taking a stand against queer hostility!

An exciting project is underway in Bremen: The Bremen Greens are calling for a series of queer traffic lights to send a strong signal against anti-queer violence. Josephine Assmus, state board spokeswoman for the Green Party, points out that these traffic lights stand for diversity, visibility and respect. She is convinced that in a democracy all people should be able to live freely and safely - a principle that is anchored in the Basic Law. Assmus emphasizes that queer people are underrepresented in many areas and their visibility can increase acceptance. In light of a disturbing incident in which a trans person was attacked, the need for visible solidarity is even more urgent. In order to advance the initiative, a signature campaign will be launched on Bremen's Christopher Street Day on August 23rd, which will be handed over to the Green Party's parliamentary group. The goal is at least 2,000 signatures.

But what does the concrete plan look like? The Greens are planning to install a total of 26 queer traffic lights that will depict the different types of relationships between same-sex couples as well as trans* symbolism and rainbow motifs. These traffic lights are not only intended to add a colorful accent to the everyday lives of Bremen's citizens, but also act as memorials for the victims of anti-queer violence. According to a report by pride.direct, a total of 26 anti-queer crimes took place in the city in 2024, although the number of unreported cases is estimated to be significantly higher.

Making diversity and solidarity visible

The idea of queer traffic lights has already found its way into Frankfurt am Main and other cities. Here the Greens in Bremen realized that the project is not only a symbol for the queer community, but also plays an important role in society. The traffic lights should be visible in the cityscape and thus reflect the normality of diversity and acceptance. Assmus aims to ensure that queer people can live safely, visibly and self-determinedly - a right that is denied to many.

However, the proposal has met with mixed reactions on the political stage. Marcel Schröder, spokesman for internal affairs, law and justice for the FDP parliamentary group, criticizes the plans as purely symbolic politics that would not really help those affected. Instead, he calls for better equipment for the police and judiciary in order to take active action against the increasing anti-queer crimes. “No one should be discriminated against because of gender, origin or faith,” emphasizes Schröder. This is a central concern in order to strengthen the feeling of security of all Bremen residents.

Bremen's commitment to the queer community

The political discussions show that the topic of queer traffic lights in Bremen is complex. Supporters of the initiative emphasize that it is time to ensure that the queer community not only receives support in times of crisis, but is also visible and respected in everyday life. “With at least 26 queer traffic lights, we are able to set a lasting example for a tolerant and diverse Bremen,” says Assmus.

For the CSD on August 23rd, the collection of signatures is seen by many as an important opportunity to take further steps towards visibility and security. It is clear to everyone involved: In order to take a stand against discrimination, we have to take a stand and take action. A look at other cities that have already implemented similar initiatives could serve as a model for Bremen to promote colorful and respectful coexistence.

For anyone who is interested in supporting the initiative, the signature collection will take place on August 23rd at 11:45 a.m. in front of the Green Party's state office at Altenwall 25. People from Bremen are cordially invited to take part and set a strong example for diversity and equality.
