Bremerhaven celebrates SAiL 2025: A maritime festival full of tradition!
Bremerhaven, the port city in northern Germany, will be all about maritime traditions in the coming days. On August 13, 2025, SAiL Bremerhaven kicked off with a great celebration that thrilled locals and guests alike. This event, which last took place ten years ago and was interrupted by the pandemic, brings tens of thousands of people to the port. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier took over the Schirrmaas at the opening. The focus of the celebrations is the “Gorch Fock”, the navy’s majestic training ship, which gave the official starting signal with its signal horn. The Federal President thanked the numerous volunteers who tirelessly contributed to the success of the event.
What makes Bremerhaven so special? In addition to the maritime atmosphere, the city with its diverse cultural offerings ensures that visitors feel at home here. These include the Climate House and the Emigrants' House, which bring the history of seafaring and the people who lived here to life. In addition, the protection of the seas and the importance of the oceans, which make up over 70% of the earth's surface, are repeatedly emphasized. It is not only a celebration of ships, but also of international understanding and peaceful coexistence Steinmeier highlights.
Maritime Days: A feast for the senses
But that's not all! For four days from August 14th, Bremerhaven will be transformed into a colorful cultural marketplace with the Maritime Days. Around 70 ships are expected in the New and Old Harbors, and entry is free on all days. Visitors can look forward to a varied program that not only includes live music and a street food festival with 26 stalls, but also offers the opportunity to take a journey into the past - as there are singing pirates and craft demonstrations during the medieval market. Buten and inland has put together exciting information about this.
The official opening will take place on August 14th at 4 p.m. by Mayor Melf Grantz. Highlights such as an impressive fireworks display on Saturday evening at 11 p.m. make the event an unforgettable experience. And who doesn't know the sounds of the sailors' choirs that perform on Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m.? For sports enthusiasts, there are also maritime yoga sessions on stand-up paddle boards in the museum harbor. A real insider tip!
Ship highlights and a look at the future
The ship highlights include the legendary Spanish carrack “Nao Victoria” and the cargo sailer “Pascual Flores”. Also included are regional ships such as the “Alexander von Humboldt II”, the “Schulschiff Deutschland” and the “Grand Duchess Elisabeth”. The ship crews offer “Open Ship” so that those interested have the opportunity to explore the impressive ships without having to register. A visit that you definitely shouldn't miss!
In the next few days, Bremerhaven will shine under the sign of tradition and tell many stories. This makes the big maritime celebration an experience that will be remembered not only for the local residents but also for tourists.
