Hurricane Melissa threatens Bahamas: evacuations and destructive winds!

The story of Hurricane Melissa is as dramatic as it is disturbing. Today, October 30, 2025, the storm has reached the Bahamas, bringing with it great danger with its destructive winds and torrential rain. The government there has already ordered evacuations for six of the more than 700 islands in order to protect the population. Around 1,500 people were airlifted from areas at risk, while air travel in the Bahamas was suspended due to the extreme weather conditions. These measures are urgently needed because Melissa is moving northeast with sustained winds of up to 150 km/h and is considered a Category 1 hurricane, according to the US Hurricane Center in Miami, which is constantly monitoring the situation. North Sea newspaper reports that the words of caution from Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis, who assured that they are prepared for the moment and will rebuild, are of great importance in such crisis situations.

While “Melissa” reached the Bahamas, the hurricane had already passed over Jamaica and Cuba. There the storm was considered the strongest in Jamaica's history, with wind speeds of up to 280 km/h. Before reaching the coast on Monday evening, the storm was located about 245 kilometers southwest of Kingston. The threatening developments led to the closure of Kingston Airport and power outages affecting over 50,000 households. Despite evacuation measures, there have already been fatal accidents in Jamaica, where three people died while felling trees, while in Haiti and the Dominican Republic at least four people died after heavy rains, although the storm did not make direct landfall there. The time warns that Jamaica's population of 2.8 million may face unprecedented consequences.

Advertising and damage forecasts

The meteorologists' forecasts are anything but rosy. Storm surges of up to four meters are expected for the southern coast of Jamaica, which could result in catastrophic flooding and numerous landslides. At the same time, hurricane warnings were issued for Jamaica, the eastern provinces of Cuba and parts of the Bahamas. Given these extreme weather events, it is no wonder that authorities in Cuba and the Bahamas are also considering evacuations in vulnerable regions.

The Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, represents a constant need for vigilance and preparation for local residents. The natural disasters it triggers not only have a devastating impact on infrastructure, but also on the Bahamas' main industry - tourism. Within the national parks of this tropical archipelago are many land and sea areas that are worthy of protection and are now threatened by the force of nature.

In this uncertain and tense situation, it is to be hoped that the population is well prepared and the evacuation measures provide tangible security, while governments do everything they can to minimize the damage and put people's survival first.
