Drone hysteria: Over 1,000 suspicious flights over Germany!

The question that is currently troubling many people in Germany is: Who controls the drones above our heads? More than 1,000 suspicious drone flights have already been registered in 2025 Deutschlandfunk reported. These numbers are based on a newly created situation report by the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), which shows an alarming trend. BKA President Holger Münch pointed out that the most frequent overflights took place over military installations, airports, defense companies and port facilities. The background to these flights remains largely obscure as the pilots are often difficult to identify.

By mid-December, a clear trend had become apparent: the “extremely dangerous situation,” as Münch describes it, was further intensified by the inclusion of the Bundeswehr in the current security considerations. In many cases, the drone flights appear to be state-controlled operations, possibly with the aim of creating uncertainty or obtaining information. However, the BKA cannot currently confirm with certainty whether these activities can be traced back to Russian actors, Münch expresses in his statements.

The federal government's plans for drone defense

Against this background, the federal government is planning comprehensive measures to increase security against drone sightings, such as daily news reported. The plan is to supplement the federal police's special units with a drone defense unit and to establish a drone defense center. The draft for a new federal police law also provides for expanded powers for the federal police in dealing with drones.

The necessity of such measures is also reflected in the fact that the existing Federal Police Act is now over 30 years old. The new regulations are now intended to clearly define what powers the federal police have in the area of drone defense. Under certain circumstances, the federal police are allowed to shoot down drones if other measures are not sufficient to avert danger.

Cooperation between the federal and state governments

The desired close integration of police and military drone defense could prove crucial, especially in light of recent incidents. The federal and state governments want to work together on solutions to improve security in sensitive places such as airports and train stations. The Federal Police and the Bundeswehr offer their support, especially if drone sightings are suspected.

However, a well-thought-out plan is not enough when the danger is as real as it is now. The federal government must act quickly to give citizens back a feeling of security and trust. At a time when threats are becoming more diverse and complex, it is essential to be properly positioned both preventatively and reactively.

It remains to be seen how the situation will develop until the new measures take effect. The discussion about security in the airspace over Germany will certainly remain an issue for a long time, not only because of the current drone flights, but also because of the capabilities to effectively combat these threats.
