Construction work: S-Bahn service between Berliner Tor and Tiefstack stopped!
In Hamburg, construction work by Deutsche Bahn InfraGO between the Berliner Tor and Tiefstack is causing unrest in the transport network. From July 14th to 20th there will be no S-Bahn traffic on this route. Therefore, a replacement bus service will be set up that will run between Berliner Tor, Rothenburgsort and Tiefstack. However, S-Bahn line 2 remains active and runs between Tiefstack and Bergedorf/Aumühle, which will hopefully bring some relief to commuters. These measures not only affect S-Bahn line 2, but also the timetable deviations between Berliner Tor and Altona. On weekdays the trains start in Barmbek and travel via the Berliner Tor and Dammtor to Altona, where they are displayed as S1. However, from 9pm until the end of service and on weekends, traffic is marked as S2, which can cause confusion among passengers if they are not careful. Trains on line S1, which run from Wedel via Poppenbüttel to the airport, are not affected by this construction work and travel through the city tunnel as usual. The RE 1 trains, which run between Bergedorf and Hamburg main station, also remain undisturbed.
But that is not the only restriction that Hamburg residents have to take into account. The U1 between Volksdorf and Ahrensburg West has been closed since June 16, 2025 and will be served with a replacement service until July 20. Meanwhile, work is also underway on the elevator at the St. Pauli stop, which will not be available until at least July 25th. Here, passengers on bus line 17 have to go to the Feldstrasse stop if they need accessibility. There are currently restrictions on accessibility at the Berliner Tor station, as transfers are only possible via stairs. Step-free access is currently only available to the subway platforms.
The focus on accessibility
The traffic restrictions are part of a larger strategy to improve public transport and accessibility in Hamburg. The aim is to make local public transport accessible to everyone – especially people with limited mobility. The “Public Transport Strategy 2030” initiative stipulates that the infrastructure at stops and stations as well as access routes must be designed to be barrier-free throughout. The importance of barrier-free buses that are suitable not only for wheelchairs, but also for Pedelecs, strollers and bicycles is highlighted.
Continuously checking accessibility in vehicles and at train stations ensures that people with special needs are not disadvantaged. This is done, among other things, through special funding programs that enable municipalities and transport companies to invest in barrier-free infrastructure. In this context, a broad information campaign is also important so that all passengers are informed about the new options and do not set off unprepared.
In order to always stay up to date, passengers are asked to pay attention to the notices and announcements at the stops as well as the information on hvv.de and in the [DB Navigator]. The HVV app also offers practical functions for planning barrier-free routes, which is a ray of hope in the current situation for many passengers.
By continuing these measures, those responsible hope not only to make Hamburg's local transport more efficient, but also to make it fairer and more accessible for everyone - after all, mobility should mean a good quality of life for everyone.
