Triathlon spectacle in Hamburg: Traffic chaos expected at the weekend!

Next weekend, more precisely on July 12th and 13th, 2025, Hamburg will become the center for sports enthusiasts when the 23rd World Triathlon takes place in the Hanseatic city. Both professionals and amateur athletes compete in different distances. The event will take place at Jungfernstieg, where the participants will hold their competitions. The anticipation is great and attracts numerous spectators to the city center.

But while the athletes do their best, drivers should prepare for significant traffic restrictions. Many streets around the Jungfernstieg will be closed throughout the weekend. The first closures will begin on Friday, July 11, 2025, and will last until Monday, July 14, 2025. The affected roads include the Ballindamm and the Wallring Tunnel, which will be closed in both directions. According to Radio Hamburg, the Ballindamm on the water side will be closed from Friday at 10:00 a.m. to Monday at 6:00 a.m., while the house-side variant will only be closed on Friday at 8:00 p.m. to Monday at 6:00 a.m remains blocked.

Details about the closures

There will be temporary closures during the competitions, especially on Saturday and Sunday. The cycle route is closed on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 5:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The running route will be closed on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 6:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It is advisable to use alternative routes to avoid the city center. It is recommended to use the Deichtortunnel as well as Willy-Brandt-Straße and northern streets in order to avoid a traffic jam, as NDR emphasizes.

Anyone traveling in the areas between the Binnenalster and the edge of the harbor must also be prepared for numerous closures. On Saturday, the Lombardsbrücke and several streets on the edge of the harbor will be closed from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. On Sunday the area will be inaccessible until 1:00 p.m. The St. Pauli Landungsbrücken cannot be reached during the Open Races, except via the U-Bahn and S-Bahn.

Plan your journey!

For those who want to experience the competitions live, it is a good idea to make a plan in advance about how best to get to the city. The main station remains accessible, although it is advisable to use alternative routes. For the best overview of the current traffic conditions, there are interactive closing time maps that can be viewed on the triathlon's official website, as hamburg.triathlon.org reports.

The event promises not only exciting competitions, but also a great atmosphere in the city. Don't miss this spectacular sporting event, but remember: if you don't plan well, you may end up stuck in traffic for longer. So it's a good idea to think about your own route beforehand!
