Bergstrasse district: New training budget to combat rising unemployment!

The current unemployment figures in the Bergstrasse district show that the situation improved slightly in September 2025. With 6,781 people registered as unemployed, there is a decrease of 340 people compared to the previous month. Nevertheless, there was an increase of 231 people or 3.5% compared to the previous year. The unemployment rate is now 4.5%, a small but notable increase from 4.3% last year. For comparison: In all of Hesse the rate is 5.8% and across Germany it is even 6.3%. These developments underscore the challenges many people face, not only locally but also at the state and federal levels.

To counteract this situation, the Bergstrasse district relies on a training and qualification budget (AQB). This program aims to actively support people with barriers to placement, such as single parents or people with a refugee background. The Hessian state government supports this budget for all 26 districts and independent cities in Hesse. Participants receive financial help for training preparation, the training itself and accompanying coaching during the training phase.

Focus on disadvantaged groups

The AQB's target groups are broad: the beneficiaries include citizens' benefit recipients, migrants, unemployed people and people from child and youth welfare. Those entitled to asylum and people with basic security due to reduced earning capacity are also specifically addressed. Angelika Beckenbach, the first district representative, emphasizes the enormous importance of this program for shaping the regional labor market. Various projects from the municipal job center New Ways are currently being implemented as part of the AQB.

The innovative offers for the budget year 2025 are particularly noteworthy. These include the “Fit into Career” program, which specifically supports people with a migrant background and health restrictions. The “Digi-Migration” project is aimed at (single) parents with a migration background and offers targeted help. Another focus is on “preparation for part-time training”, which is supported by the Hessian Ministry for Social Affairs and Integration and aims to increase acceptance of education.

The numbers speak for themselves

The unemployment figures in Hesse over a longer period also show the increase in the unemployment rate. According to statistics from the Federal Employment Agency published on October 1, the rate increased from September 2023 to September 2025 and is a clear indication of the challenges of the labor market in the region. Access to the current data is available online and offers a comprehensive overview of the situation in Hesse over the last two years.

With these efforts and the introduction of innovative approaches, the district hopes to not only reduce unemployment, but also create real opportunities for people in difficult circumstances. A strong training and qualification budget is seen as the key to improving the regional labor market situation.
