Storm warning! Thunderstorms, hail and storms threaten Hesse on Sunday

What a change in weather we are facing! From Sunday evening, July 20, 2025, Hesse expects the weather to worsen drastically. The forecasts from the German Weather Service (DWD) bring with them the usual symptoms of a summer storm: hail, lightning and thunderous thunderstorms are forecast, and it will not only be uncomfortable but also dangerous. This warning takes the wind out of the sails of summer anticipation - temperatures remain at a summery 23 to 31 degrees, but a high risk of severe weather is now the issue, especially in the Main-Kinzig, Odenwald and Fulda districts, where level 2 of 4 has already been activated. Fr.de reports on the initial effects, including fire brigade operations on the A5 motorway due to fallen trees.

But that's just the beginning. The thunderstorm conditions are affecting Hesse and it is feared that falling trees and lightning strikes pose serious dangers to road users and pedestrians. The DWD warns urgently about the risks of flooding and aquaplaning. In the Main-Taunus and Hochtaunus districts, the highest warning levels of 3 apply to several cities, including Offenbach and Frankfurt. These weather warnings are valid until the evening of July 20th, so anyone planning to venture out should think twice. DWD makes it clear that there will be cooler sea air, especially on Monday night, which will be replaced by wonderfully hot air.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain in prospect

The thunderstorms cannot be stopped for the time being. On Monday, meteorologists expect an increase in thunderstorm activity, which will also spread across eastern Germany. Heavy rain of up to 40 liters per square meter could occur in a single hour, which could lead to dangerous flooding. Wind speeds are equally worrying, potentially reaching up to 100 km/h. Fr.de emphasizes that hail with diameters of up to 3 cm cannot be ruled out - a warning that should make both truck drivers and two-wheeler drivers sit up and take notice.

The DWD is expecting a real spectacle in the sky - combined with the heat that continues to dominate events, the weather situation could become seriously chaotic. This is particularly true for the night from Sunday to Monday, when heavy rain will move across the region in larger quantities. But the weather forecast is not entirely gloomy: a brief calm is expected on Tuesday, followed by sunshine on Wednesday and temperatures of up to 26 degrees, before thunderstorms move in again from the west. A real up and down that shows that summer in Hesse can have all facets.

Be careful!

Given the impending storms, it is advisable to keep outdoor activities to a minimum and always keep an eye on weather warnings. The DWD announces a further update for July 20th at 9 p.m. so that everyone can stay up to date. This weather situation could pose a real risk to recreational safety, particularly with potential flooding and high winds. Stay safe and well informed!
