Festive singing celebration: Choirs delight in the Knights' Hall of the Palatinate Castle!
On October 25, 2025, the members of the men's choir 1846 e.V. Viernheim had a special occasion because they were invited to the anniversary celebration in the ceremonial knight's hall of the Palatinate Castle in Groß-Umstadt. The men's choir 1842 Groß-Umstadt e.V., one of the oldest clubs in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district, can look back on a long tradition and celebrated its 180th anniversary just two years ago. The anticipation for this festive occasion was all the more great among the singers.
Before the official event, a 1.5-hour city tour with wine tasting took place in the town hall cellar, which gave guests the opportunity to enjoy the charming atmosphere of Groß-Umstadt. The Knights' Hall was filled to capacity when the celebrations began at 4 p.m. Alwin Kreher, the chairman, opened the event and handed over the floor to Marianne Münch, the speaker of the women's choir.
Musical performances and guests of honor
Those present could look forward to a varied program. The women's choir opened the evening with the emotional songs “Hello” and “Butterfly” by Daniel Gerard. Mayor René Kirch was also among the guests of honor and not only delivered greetings, but also presented an envelope to support the association's work.
The variety of performances was particularly impressive. The choirs Cantiamo from Dudenhofen and Village Voices from Habitzheim organized the celebration with well-known melodies from Sting, Michael Jackson and the Carpenters. All choirs were conducted by Hans Kaspar Scharf, while the men's choir of the MGV 1842 was conducted by Andreas Morhard.
The singers of MGV 1846 e.V. Viernheim impressed the audience with pieces such as “Babylon’s Falling”, “Over Seven Bridges” and “Freedom”. Christian Hofmann, Vice President of the Hessian Singers' Association, also addressed the guests with a greeting and brought a voucher to purchase sheet music.
A successful celebration with warm farewell words
The event was characterized by a warm atmosphere and the joyful coming together of the choirs. The men's choir 1842 e.V. Groß-Umstadt impressively sang “Homesickness” and “Conquest of Paradise”. There were numerous encores that got the audience excited. Among them was the moving “A song can be a bridge,” which underlined the spirit of choral singing.
Following the performance of MGV 1846 e.V. with “Merci, Cherie”, “Ohne Disch” and “Trink Doch oana mit” there were further encores such as “Willenlos” by Marius Müller-Westernhagen. The event reached its culmination when the women's choir ended with “One way Wind” and the encore “Liebe das Leben”. The board warmly thanked those involved and presented Hans Kaspar Scharf with a “food basket” as a token of appreciation.
The symbolic thank you was particularly charming when the men of the MGV 1842 congratulated the women with a rose and a piccolo. Alwin Kreher concluded by wishing all the best for the future and a pleasant journey home for everyone involved.
The MGV 1842 Groß-Umstadt not only shows once again how important choral music is for social interaction, but also what influence it can have on people's emotional well-being. Choral singing remains a valuable heritage that strengthens communities and spreads joy. For interested singing lovers: MGV rehearsals take place regularly – everyone is welcome!
