New exhibition year 2026: Art, nature and myth in Darmstadt!

The Hessian State Museum Darmstadt has put together an exciting exhibition program for 2026 that combines art, nature and culture. How Rhine Main culture reports, the focus is on the diversity of international photography. The exhibition #SHOTBYADAMS kicks off with impressive photographs by Bryan Adams, which will be on view from March 20th to June 21st, 2026.

In this first major show of the year, Adams presents a selection from his four unique photo series. Among other things, portraits of superstars such as Mick Jagger and Amy Winehouse, which were captured in egocentric poses, are impressive. The themes of war veterans and homelessness, which are covered in the series WOUNDED: THE LEGACY OF WAR and HOMELESS, also find their place. The IN COLOR series combines portraits with individual colors on Plexiglas and gives every photo a special touch. The curators Anke Degenhard and Mat Humphrey have put a lot of effort into staging the works effectively hlmd.de highlights that this exhibition is part of an already established series of photography exhibitions at the museum.

Creativity from children to art history

After the kick-off with Bryan Adams, an exciting primary school competition is on the agenda. From April 19th to May 3rd, children can present their creative collaborative works in the Karl Freund Gallery under the motto “Fantastic Creatures”. Viewers are invited to cast their votes and award prizes for the best works.

Another highlight is the exhibition about the artist Hedwig Kruse-Geibel, which will be on view from June 18th to September 27th, 2026. Here it's all about expressive printmaking and collages that illuminate mythological, religious and fantastical themes.

Insects and dragons in focus

Another fascinating topic is covered in the exhibition “Multifaceted Insects. Diversity / Endangerment / Protection”, which will be shown from August 13, 2026 to January 24, 2027. This interactive show addresses the central role of insects in our ecosystems and offers visitors the opportunity to experience these fascinating creatures up close.

There will also be a special exhibition entitled “Dragons – Myth and Reality” from October 2nd, 2026, which will run until January 17th, 2027. Here visitors can explore the diverse depictions of dragons from an art historical and scientific perspective. This show is brought to life in collaboration with the Schnütgen Museum and the Museum of East Asian Art in Cologne.

Finish with breathtaking nature photography

The exhibition year closes with the world-famous exhibition “Wildlife Photographer of the Year” from December 4, 2026 to April 4, 2027, in which award-winning photographs from the Natural History Museum London will be presented. This exhibition promises breathtaking insights into the beauty of nature and the arts of photography.
