Schmitz, who is contractually bound until the summer of 2026, was released in the spring, but an agreement on terminating the contract has not yet been reached. The amount of the severance payment is causing disagreement, and the case is now before the Darmstadt Labor Court. The date, which has already been postponed twice, will take place on July 21st.
The separation from Schmitz was not due to his person or commitments, but rather because of different ideas about the direction of the analysis department. In the time since he was hired in the summer of 2016, Schmitz has taken on various roles at the club. He started as an athletic trainer and video analyst under head coach Norbert Meier and experienced a total of eight head coaches in nine years. As a coach, he even remained undefeated in February 2019 and took interim responsibility for the team. Schmitz is now the only undefeated coach in the recent history of the Lilies.
