Moving art at the airport: Rings of Bismarck float in Terminal 3!

Something is happening at Frankfurt Airport! The new Terminal 3, which is scheduled to open on April 22, 2026, will have a very special art installation. Artist Julius von Bismarck has created a stunning work entitled “The First, the Last, Eternity” that transforms the check-in hall into a fascinating work of art. How T-Online reports, three massive, moving ring sculptures will capture the light of the airport at a dizzying height of 18 meters.

The sculptures, which are geometrically referred to as “Tori”, are true heavyweights: they weigh between 1 and 3 tons and have diameters of 3, 5 and 7 meters. The works of art consist of a total of 636 colored aluminum discs. These fascinating arches show, among other things, the topography of the earth and are motorically movable so that they are constantly changing. This means that the installation is always perceived differently, which is likely to captivate visitors. Loud aerotelegraph This dynamic plays with perception and movement and creates a modern and aesthetic atmosphere.

Selection process and artists

Like Fraport AG in a press release communicates, the decision for Julius von Bismarck was made after a multi-stage internal selection process. This process was led by Fraport Expansion Süd GmbH and the curator Heike Sütter. In the final phase of the selection, which involved experts from the Kunsthalle Schirn and the Städel Museum, a total of three final artists had the chance to present their projects.

Von Bismarck himself speaks of the special challenge of creating art for an airport. He has dealt with current topics and techniques, which made him a suitable candidate. During his career, his art has been shown in many prestigious institutions, including the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. Born in Breisach am Rhein in 1983, the artist now lives and works in Berlin and Switzerland.

There is great anticipation for the opening of the new terminal and the art installation. This combination of movement, perception and art will certainly be a highlight for all travelers and visitors to Frankfurt Airport!
