Frankfurt is relying on new park-and-ride spaces: 2,000 planned for commuters!

A lot is happening in Frankfurt am Main with regard to the park-and-ride offering for commuters. The city is facing a major expansion of its parking spaces in order to better cope with the ever-growing flow of commuters. Around 460,000 people commute to the city every day, with around 60 percent of them driving. The existing transport system is already reaching its limits, and the current concept envisages creating around 2,000 new parking spaces for Park-and-Ride (P+R) in order to strengthen local public transport and relieve commuter traffic T Online reported.

Particular attention has been paid to the Römerhof and Borsigallee locations, where around 1,200 of these new P+R parking spaces are planned. There are currently 901 P+R spaces available on Borsigallee. The Taunusblick, Kalbach and Frankfurter Berg locations are also planned, which together could create a further 836 parking spaces. But before things can get started, preliminary investigations into planning and nature conservation feasibility must be carried out n-tv supplemented.

Prospects for commuters and local transport

The importance of the P+R expansion is emphasized not only by the city administration, but also by important institutions such as the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) and the ADAC. The RMV managing director emphasizes how important P+R is for commuters from smaller towns. Expanding the offer could improve the accessibility of Frankfurt companies and, above all, relieve the burden on commuters from the surrounding area.

In order to offer short-term solutions, a cooperation with the Hessen-Center has been established since March 2025. This involves checking event parking spaces in order to create additional capacity. However, it remains unclear when exactly the actual expansion work can begin, as construction and financing templates must first be drawn up.

Costs and conditions

For users who do not want to wait for the new parking spaces, there will be the option to rent long-term parking spaces for a monthly price of 20.00 euros from September 1, 2025. However, this only applies to P+R use in combination with public transport, such as RMV explained. Those interested should note that the number of available long-term parking spaces is limited and the rental agreement must be received in full at least ten days before the end of the month. These flexible termination modalities and the option of automatic extension offer users a pleasant level of flexibility and planning.

Overall, it shows that the city of Frankfurt is on the right track to relieve commuter traffic and make the use of public transport more attractive. Expanding park-and-ride offerings is a step in the right direction and could help make traffic in the city more efficient in the long term.
