Violent fan confrontation at Hanover main station!
On October 25, 2025, an unpleasant incident occurred between FC St. Pauli fans and VfL Wolfsburg supporters at Hanover main station. The two groups of fans happened to meet on the way to their respective away games: While the St. Pauli fans were traveling to Frankfurt, VfL Wolfsburg was on the way to HSV Hamburg. About 50 of several hundred fans quickly got into an argument, which led to commotion with bottle throwing, physical injuries and insults. The situation escalated so much that the federal police had to intervene to separate the two groups and put them on their trains, reported news.de.
The federal police took the matter seriously and checked the FC St. Pauli fans when they arrived at Frankfurt am Main train station. 270 guests were directed to a processing line to determine the identities of suspects and witnesses. There were extensive seizures and the Hesse state police sent these fans off, which meant that they were not allowed to attend the game in Frankfurt. A large number of the supporters then began their journey home, which, however, went smoothly, as also stated by n-tv.de was reported.
Fan help and prevention
In recent years there has been repeated discussion about the role of fan projects, which have existed for over 30 years and aim to prevent riots around football games. Initiatives like these are considered a model of success because they attempt to counteract radicalization dynamics and promote long-term personal development. The German Football Association (DFB) and the German Football League (DFL) have proposed supporting such projects since autumn 2022, but Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of these measures. He emphasized that the direct influence of these fan projects on the security situation was difficult to prove Deutschlandfunk.
One of the points of criticism is the financing of these projects. While the public sector raises half of the amount, the DFB and the DFL also contribute to the financing. However, Schuster would like to see concrete successes in stadium security, which cannot always be guaranteed. Nevertheless, social workers report positive development trends that, among other things, are directed against discrimination and racism. The de-escalation work of fan projects is also recommended by Police Chief Michael Madre, who encourages a holistic view of such measures and points out their importance not only on match days.
Overall, it appears that the close connection between football and fan behavior is a sensitive issue that requires constant attention in order to avoid incidents similar to those in Hanover in the future.
