Traffic chaos in Frankfurt: Ironman brings the city to a standstill!

On Sunday, June 29, 2025, Frankfurt am Main will be the venue for the 23rd Mainova IRONMAN European Championships, and this will not only attract over 3000 triathletes from different nations, but will also significantly impact traffic in and around the city. The event features an exciting triathlon, which consists of 3.8 km of swimming in the Langener Waldsee, 178 km of cycling through Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main area and 42.2 km of running along the Main, with the finish at the venerable Römerberg. The athletes also have the chance to qualify for the World Championships in Hawaii and Nice, which adds extra excitement. According to fr.de the first swimming start for professionals will take place at 6:20 a.m.

There will be significant traffic restrictions as early as Saturday, June 28, 2025. Construction begins at 6 p.m. on Römerberg and along the banks of the Main, followed by a complete closure of the banks of the Main between Alter Brücke and Friedensbrücke at 10 p.m. Extensive road closures will also come into force on race day itself, starting at 3 a.m. The cycling route in particular will be closed from 5 a.m., while the running routes will no longer be passable from 8 a.m. All these restrictions will last until the evening of the same day, estimated until 11 p.m. The organizers are working intensively to minimize disruption for local residents and ask for your understanding for the unavoidable noise on race day, as ironman.com reports.

Affected areas and traffic adjustments

The closures affect numerous streets and areas. The northern and southern banks of the Main between Osthafen and Westhafen remain completely closed, as do the Römerberg and the adjacent streets. Restrictions are to be expected particularly in Sachsenhausen as well as in the Nordend and Westend. There are only restricted access to streets such as the Alte Brücke, the Eisernen Steg and the Holbeinsteg, while the Untermainkai, Schaumainkai and Mainkai are completely closed. There will also be restrictions in the parking garages and changes to local public transport.

The subway lines U1, U2, U3, U4, U5, U8 have changed cycle times, while lines 6 and 7 only run to the “Alte Oper”. Tram lines such as 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 21 are rerouted, and line 11 is completely canceled. In addition, numerous bus routes will be rerouted or shortened, and lines 30, 36 and 46 will be canceled all day. The police recommend that you avoid the city center and travel by public transport, as many excursion destinations in the city will be difficult to reach on this day. Further information on the traffic adjustments can be found on the City of Frankfurt and traffiQ websites, as described on rheinmainverlag.de.

An event like this not only brings international athletes, but also big challenges for everyone who is out and about in Frankfurt that day. So if you plan to be in the city on June 29th, you should prepare well and adjust your route if necessary. In any case, it means: There's something going on - so keep your eyes open and have a good trip!
