Attention when swimming! The Big Jump in Hann is so dangerous. Münden!

What's going in Hann in summer. Münden? Last weekend a hustle and bustle was announced, because the "Big Jump" attracted the waters of the Werra, Fulda and Weser. This rivery joint campaign as part of a European river bathing day was very popular and conveyed an important concern: water protection and safety when swimming in rivers. Loud Göttinger Tageblatt took 45 brave swimmers on the 9.2 kilometer route to Vaake.

The event was not designed as a competition, but as a joint experience. Participants Gisbert Klockemeyer underlined the risks associated with swimming in rivers and pointed out that one should never go into the water alone. Helpers of the Technical Relief Agency Münden and the water watch of the German Red Cross ensured the safety of the bathers, and that was also necessary.

swimming: risks and dangers

bathing in rivers and lakes is popular, but it harbors specific dangers that are often underestimated. According to the Environmental Bundesamt there are around 2000 bathing water in Germany, especially on lakes and coasts. In rivers, such as in the Rhine, however, the risks are higher. The German Life Saving (DLRG) is also convincing, which urges strongly of strong currents and other dangers.

heat waves lead to an increase in bathing accidents, and the numbers speak for themselves: DLRG helper saved 1,446 people nationwide in 2024, but tragically, 15 people lost their lives in bathing accidents. The dangers are diverse: unclear water depths, sudden waste of the shore and the risky combination of alcohol and bad swimming skills can have fatal consequences.

Caution and recommendations

So that excursions into the cool water are not doomed, the DLRG recommends that you always swim at guard or visit swimming pools. Particular caution also applies to children who should always remain within sight of the supervisors. In addition, swimmers must observe the water temperatures: only at least 20 degrees Celsius should you immerse yourself in the floods.

A look at the local conditions shows that bathing at Rosdorf's excavator lake is generally prohibited. Perhaps it is because four fatal bathing accidents have taken place in the past 16 years. In addition, the combination of steeply sloping banking and sudden depths can be dangerous.

a positive perspective

The commitment and the organization of the "Big Jump" have made it possible to promote consciousness formation for safe bathing in rivers. "We are very satisfied with the event," said Maria van Dorsen, main organizer, and assured that there are already numerous commitments for the next year. In the context of such actions, not only the water protection can be brought to the fore, but also the joy of swimming in nature can be promoted.

only one thing remains to say: swimming is fun, but security is going on! So, inform yourself well and enjoy the warm days responsibly!
