Be careful when swimming! That’s how dangerous the Big Jump” in Hann is. Münden!
What's going on in Hann in summer? Münden? Last weekend there was a lot of hustle and bustle here, as the “Big Jump” lured people into the waters of the Werra, Fulda and Weser. This river-based community activity as part of a European river bathing day was very well received and conveyed an important concern: water protection and safety when swimming in rivers. Loud Göttingen Tageblatt 45 courageous swimmers took part in the 9.2 kilometer long route to Vaake.
The event was not designed as a competition, but rather as a communal experience. Participant Gisbert Klockemeyer highlighted the risks associated with swimming in rivers and pointed out that one should never enter the water alone. Helpers from the Münden Technical Relief Agency and the German Red Cross water rescue service ensured the safety of the bathers, and that was also necessary.
Swimming: risks and dangers
Swimming in rivers and lakes is popular, but it poses specific dangers that are often underestimated. According to that Federal Environment Agency There are around 2,000 bathing water bodies in Germany, especially on lakes and coasts. However, the risks are higher in rivers such as the Rhine. The German Life Saving Society (DLRG) is also convincing, warning urgently about strong currents and other dangers.
Heat waves lead to an increase in swimming accidents, and the numbers speak for themselves: nationwide, DLRG helpers saved 1,446 people from drowning in 2024, but tragically 15 people lost their lives in swimming accidents. The dangers are manifold: unclear water depths, sudden drops in the bank and the risky combination of alcohol and poor swimming skills can have fatal consequences.
Caution and recommendations
To ensure that trips into the cool water do not become disastrous, the DLRG recommends always swimming at guarded swimming areas or going to swimming pools. Particular caution also applies to children, who should always remain within sight of the supervisors. Swimmers also have to pay attention to the water temperatures: you should only dive into the water when it is at least 20 degrees Celsius.
A look at the local conditions shows that swimming in the Rosdorfer Baggersee is generally prohibited. Maybe it's because there have been four fatal swimming accidents in the last 16 years. In addition, the combination of steep banks and sudden depths can be dangerous.
A positive perspective
The commitment and organization of the “Big Jump” made it possible to raise awareness for safe swimming in rivers. “We are very happy with the event,” explained Maria van Dorssen, main organizer, and assured that there are already numerous commitments for next year. As part of such campaigns, not only can water protection be brought to the fore, but the joy of swimming in nature can also be promoted.
There's only one thing left to say: swimming is fun, but safety comes first! So, be well informed and enjoy the warm days responsibly!
