Fulda cycles together: 411,170 kilometers for climate protection!
Get on the saddle, get set, go! In an impressive campaign, cyclists in the Fulda district covered a total of 411,170 kilometers on their two-wheelers from May 25th to June 14th, 2025 during the “City Cycling”. There were even 2,001 participants in this initiative. It was the first time that all municipalities in the district pedaled together and thus sent a strong signal for cycling culture. City planning officer Daniel Schreiner is enthusiastic about the great result and emphasizes the importance of the participants' feedback on the cycling facilities and possible danger points on the routes that were collected.
A special highlight was the award ceremony for the campaign. The main winner, Solvejg Bolz from Schmalnau (part of the “Biking UTHs” team), was presented with a voucher for 750 euros for a new bike or accessories. But she wasn't the only one who was happy! Luca-Marie Engel from Neuhof (Team “Flowerpower 2.0”) and Christoph Böse from Edelzell (Team City Administration of Fulda) were also pleased to receive modern bicycle helmets. The ceremonial ceremony took place at Universitätsplatz as part of the “Cargobike Roadshow”, where, in addition to Schreiner, other important representatives such as Christian Hillenbrand (local mobility coordinator for the district of Fulda) and Stephan Fehrenbach (mobility manager for the city of Fulda) were present.
School cycling – an incentive for young cyclists
But the “City Cycling” initiative is not just limited to adults. Parallel to city cycling, school cycling also takes place in Germany, which focuses on students. The main aim here is to promote sustainable, healthy and independent mobility. Parents can also make a contribution by setting an example and avoiding the parent taxi. Teachers are also motivated by taking on commuting as a role model.
The school cycling takes place at the same time as the “city cycling” and the kilometers that are collected go to the respective city or municipality. This year, eight federal states can look forward to taking part. The aim of this competition is clear: to make the potential of cycling visible to children and young people and to encourage them to actively participate in cycling.
Support from the federal government
Cycling not only has local significance, but also contributes to achieving the federal government's climate goals. The ministry made funds available to further expand the promotion of cycling. There are currently several investment programs that will remain active until 2029 and 2030. These include, among others, the “Cycling Model Project” and the “City and Country Special Program”, which aim to support the construction and maintenance of cycle paths.
The federal government's financial support is a clear step forward in optimizing cycling in Germany, while at the same time raising awareness of the needs of cyclists. The feedback from “Stadtradel” participants is a valuable tool for improving and adapting existing infrastructure.
In summary, “city cycling” offers a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness of cycling and promote its positive impact on the environment and health. In Fulda and beyond it is clear that cycling is much more than just a means of transport - it is a way of life.
