New tunnel in Hofbieber: A safe cycle path for commuters is being created!

An ambitious project to improve the cycling infrastructure is currently being implemented in Hofbieber. The most important measure is the construction of a bicycle tunnel under the busy Fulda-Tann state road. The aim is to create a safe cycle path from Hofbieber towards Wiesen. Mayor Markus Röder recently informed the municipal council about the positive budget figures: The budget for 2025 ends with a pleasing surplus of almost 100,000 euros. The annual financial statements of the municipal utilities also show a surplus of around 300,000 euros, which stabilizes the municipality's financial situation Fulda newspaper reported.

In order to realize the tunnel project, the state road must be closed. The tunnel tube is around 30 meters long and will be placed on a 20 meter wide road at the exit to Hofbieber. Thanks to grants from the state and district of around 85 to 90 percent of the total costs, which amount to around 2.6 million euros, the financial resources for implementation are secured. Other cycle path projects include the connection from Langenberg to Mahlerts and from Mahlerts to Unterbernhards. The connection to the existing cycle paths will take place in the coming weeks, and the tunnel will disappear completely underground once all work is completed.

Safer Riding: Improvements for Cyclists

The importance of these measures is illustrated by the need to avoid risky crossings of the busy road. Safe and attractive cycling infrastructure is crucial, not only for local residents but also for commuters waiting for the road to reopen following construction. Local police recently carried out a bike coding check on the Milseburg cycle path, indicating a growing awareness of cycling safety.

However, there is not only news about the tunnel in the region. The popular Milseburg Tunnel will also reopen on April 11, 2025, after serving as a roost for protective bats over the winter. A total of 89 bats were counted this winter, the highest number in two decades. Promotion and development of cycling

With the “City and Country” special financial aid program, the federal government has also set itself the goal of further expanding the cycling infrastructure and making it more attractive.
