Tree planting challenge: This is how green our region is becoming thanks to the fire brigade and clubs!
A green wave is underway in Cologne, enriching the city with new trees. The tree planting challenge is gaining momentum and is generating burgeoning interest in reforestation. Clubs, organizations and companies of all stripes plant trees and nominate others to actively participate, like this Augsburger Allgemeine reported.
The demand for trees has increased noticeably in regional tree nurseries. Hubert Lukas Sailer, the managing director of a tree nursery, talks about the first calls he received four to five weeks ago. Lia Thum from the Eberhardt tree nursery in Möttingen also confirms that young football clubs in particular are showing great interest. Fresh green seems to be in demand not only in an ecological sense, but also as a sign of cohesion.
Important tips for hobby gardeners
But how do you plant a tree correctly? There are some essential steps to keep in mind. First of all, it is recommended to dig a planting hole that is at least twice the size of the tree's pot. Additionally, the plastic pot should be removed before planting and the roots should be gently ripped open to encourage growth. The tree should be planted about 1-2 cm deep, and watering plays a big role: 20 liters of water are recommended at the beginning, then another 20 liters once or twice a week. It wouldn't be a bad idea to discuss this with the owners beforehand when it comes to someone else's property.
Fruit trees are now particularly popular, as they are not only ideal for beginners, but also promote the insect population in the area. The city and village climate benefits noticeably from the planting campaign, says Sailer.
Fire departments enjoy planting trees
An interesting aspect of the tree planting challenge are the active participants from the fire department. Firefighters all over Germany are involved in this campaign and combine climate protection with team spirit. The Fire department magazine highlights that nominated fire departments usually have seven days to plant a tree. Most groups meet these deadlines on time and often document their actions in entertaining videos, highlighting the playful nature of the challenge.
The Schwarzenberg fire department planted three trees in March and nominated other aid organizations. The fire brigade in Thedinghausen also set up four fruit trees and invited other fire departments to imitate them. This campaign is actively supported in almost all federal states, and it is an exciting mix of serious environmental work and comradely solidarity that comes together here.
Around the world, efforts in the tree planting challenge are becoming increasingly extensive, and things could soon become even greener in Cologne too. What a great opportunity for all plant lovers out there to take action and contribute to climate protection. Let's put down the axes and get out the gardening tools - because every tree counts!
