On October 30, 2025, the Wetterau district council issued an urgent resolution calling on Deutsche Bahn and the Federal Ministry of Transport to withdraw their plans to drastically reduce the number of ICE stops in Friedberg. There are currently 13 ICE stops planned in Friedberg, but Deutsche Bahn would like to reduce this number to just two. This is met with strong criticism because Friedberg main station plays a central role as a transport hub between Frankfurt and Giessen. The importance of well-developed connections for the region was clearly emphasized by various parliamentary group representatives.

“Good local and long-distance transport connections are crucial for the future viability of our region,” said Sebastian Wysocki, the CDU parliamentary group leader. The Greens support this position and have also presented a draft resolution calling for the ICE stops to be maintained. Interestingly, the FDP had suggested removing the demands on Deutsche Bahn and the ministry and instead involving members of the Bundestag, which met with mixed reactions.

Discussions in the district council

Another motion, which was only submitted by the AfD, concerned traffic safety at a pedestrian traffic light in Glauburg-Stockheim. This emergency motion was rejected by a large majority - an initiative that ultimately did not receive the necessary support. “The allegedly serious accident at the traffic lights is not recorded in the police statistics,” explained district councilor Marion Götz from the SPD and pointed to the discussion about the urgency of the application, which was overwhelmingly negative. These developments also shed light on the upcoming local elections and the internal tensions within the coalition between the CDU and SPD, which are being watched critically by both the Greens and the FDP.

During a productive break in the meeting, the parliamentary groups developed a joint resolution that calls on Deutsche Bahn to revise its timetable changes. District Administrator Jan Weckler from the CDU should work on the RMV supervisory board to maintain the connections. The unanimous decision on the resolution shows the district council's determination not to endanger the mobility of citizens and to ensure the preservation of important regional connections.
