Attack on betting shop in Kelsterbach – perpetrator fled on folding bike!

On Wednesday evening, October 2, 2025, there was a robbery at a betting shop on Martin-Luther-Straße in Cologne, which caused great concern among residents. At 11:31 p.m., an unknown perpetrator surprised a 29-year-old employee as he was leaving the restaurant. Using an unknown object pressed against the man's back, the robber demanded money. Fortunately, the betting shop's alarm system was triggered, causing the perpetrator to flee.

The perpetrator went in an unknown direction on a folding bike and escaped in the dark. However, the description of the male perpetrator provides some clues for the investigation: He was around 175 cm tall, wore a black scarf, a black baseball cap and a jacket with a hood and black shoes with white soles. He also had a gray backpack with him. The police ask anyone who has information about this crime to contact Commissariat 10 on 06142/696-0 in order to catch the perpetrator and prevent further attacks.

Security situation in Cologne

The attack on the betting shop is part of a worrying series of robberies that have been increasingly recorded in German cities in recent years. According to current statistics, over 38,000 robbery crimes were reported in 2022. Even though the number of robberies has been halved in the last twenty years, the security situation in many parts of the city remains tense. In North Rhine-Westphalia in particular, the number of residential burglaries and robberies increased significantly.

The frequency of theft is another chapter in these criminal statistics. Overall theft crimes have increased again for the first time since 2015 - around 1.78 million such cases were registered in 2022. This means that protecting property is becoming increasingly important for many citizens. It is also noteworthy that the clearance rate for robbery crimes, at almost 60%, is higher than for other crimes such as home burglaries, where it was 16.1%.

First step towards defusing

In order to strengthen the feeling of security in the districts of Cologne, it is important that the population actively cooperates with the police. Witnesses and residents are the first eyewitnesses who can provide valuable information. Therefore, the call from the police to provide information is of great importance. Particular vigilance is required to prevent such incidents and curb criminal activities.

It remains to be hoped that the investigation will quickly lead to success and that the people of Cologne will soon be able to feel safer again. The developments surrounding crime in German cities highlight the need for preventive measures and effective cooperation between citizens and security forces so that no one has to worry about attacks in their own neighborhoods.
