Bird flu warning: obligation for poultry farmers in several districts!

The poultry industry in Germany is currently facing serious challenges. After new cases of avian influenza were detected in various districts, including Märkisch-Oderland and Oberhavel, the authorities took decisive measures. The Märkisch-Oderland district ordered a stable requirement for commercial poultry farmers. Private owners are not affected, but the recommendation is to keep the animals in closed stables or under suitable protective devices to prevent possible infection. Measures were also taken in the Oberhavel district due to bird flu infections: Here, all poultry farmers are required to have stables after infected wild birds were discovered. In Kremmen, affected poultry flocks had to be killed in order to avoid the spread.

Another worrying finding came from the Spree-Neiße district and the city of Cottbus, where a stable requirement will also be imposed from Wednesday. Even in the Uckermark, it will be required to keep poultry in closed stables from Sunday. The situation is so serious that corresponding measures will also come into force in the Teltow-Fläming district from Wednesday. A worrying case was also reported in Potsdam: The first case of avian influenza was diagnosed there in a crane that was found dead.

All-round protection for poultry farming

In order to contain the spread of the virus, numerous events such as poultry exhibitions and markets are prohibited for the time being. From November 2nd, all poultry farmers are required to keep their animals in closed stables or under wild bird-proof devices. The detection of the H5N1 strain of bird flu in wild birds in the region makes the situation even more threatening. Farmers are called upon to take safety measures seriously.

What resources are available to poultry farmers? A new online platform offers practical tips for preventing outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Here, farmers and their employees will find useful infographics on hygiene rules as well as checklists for employees and visitors. There are also instructions for everyday stable life to ensure the safety of the animals. These information offerings are aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of bird flu and providing concrete assistance that is easy to implement. This places a central emphasis on raising awareness in the industry, which not only benefits farmers but also their families.

During these critical times, it is crucial that poultry farmers are well informed and aware to prevent the spread of the virus. Further information on the recommended safety precautions can be found at Agricultural today.
