Unemployment in Hersfeld-Rotenburg is falling – a ray of hope for the region!

The current situation on the labor market in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district shows encouraging progress. In September 2025, unemployment fell by 3.1% to a total of 2,837 people. This results in an unemployment rate of 4.3%, which represents a positive development compared to the previous month at 4.5%, but cannot quite keep up with the year-on-year comparison (4.1%) HNA reported.

The declines can be attributed, among other things, to the end of the summer holidays in Hesse, which experience has shown to have a positive influence on job offers. Across the entire Hessian region, the number of unemployed people fell by 6,400, meaning a decline to 206,940. Nevertheless, we still have 10,600 more unemployed compared to the previous year. Peripheral to the overall development, the Hessian unemployment rate also fell by 0.2 points to 5.8%.

Limited positive developments

As the employment agency reports, almost half of the unemployed have not completed vocational training. This shows that there is a significant mismatch in the labor market, as many vacancies require well-trained specialists. One more reason to focus on further training. In October, the agency is offering several online workshops to give unemployed and employed people a new perspective:

  • 7. Oktober: Berufliche Neu- und Umorientierung
  • 21. Oktober: Beruflich glücklich
  • 23. Oktober: Find a Job – Berufliche Orientierung + Bewerbung mit KI
  • 28. Oktober: Frauen im Arbeitsmarkt von morgen
  • 28. Oktober: Berufswelt Gesundheit

Registration for the workshops is necessary.

Long-term trends and challenges

Looking back to 2024, it can be said that unemployment in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district has increased slightly. With an average number of 2,690 unemployed, this represents an increase of 1.4% compared to the previous year, with the average unemployment rate leveling off at 4.1% - below the Hessian rate of 5.5%. Matthias Dengler, chairman of the Bad Hersfeld-Fulda employment agency, speaks of a mixed outcome. The decline in unemployment among women and people without a German passport is particularly noticeable, especially among refugees from Ukraine.

However, concerns about long-term unemployment remain, with 1,118 people unemployed for over a year and an increase of 10.2%. Unemployment in the under 25 age group increased by 5.5%. The problems on the labor market are complex, and due to the immigration of foreign skilled workers, employment subject to social security contributions was at its highest: 49,689 employees.

Another aspect is the increasing use of short-time work, which 174 companies with 4,628 employees have made use of. As a result, the employer service acquired 2,310 positions, which is 479 fewer than in the previous year. A signaled mismatch between people looking for work and the available positions is evident here, as two thirds of the unemployed cannot demonstrate any formal vocational training.

Overall, it can be seen that the labor market in Hersfeld-Rotenburg is closely linked to challenges, despite positive developments. The need to improve the skills of the workforce and strengthen the connection between education and the labor market remains a key task for the future.
